URGENT HELP NEEDED TO SAVE THE SANCTUARY: For the past 16 months Shadow’s Fund has worked without pause to create and sustain the Sheltering Oak Sanctuary.We’ve dug trenches and built fences. We’ve created a new home for rescued animals and have restored the land that is home to wild animals. We’ve gently welcomed dogs – bruised and broken – into the safety and love of the sanctuary, and we’ve joyfully (and sometimes tearfully) wished them well as they have moved on to their forever homes. We have marveled at the selfless volunteers that give their time and their hearts to help a dog heal, and how the dogs in turn have helped people heal. From disabled adults to at risk youth, from those in need of a community to connect with to those required to perform community service, the sanctuary has been a place of hope and healing for people too.

This incredible place serves as a safety net to the most vulnerable shelter dogs – the lost and lonely grey muzzled seniors and the feared and misunderstood pit bulls. Here they all get love and a 2nd chance.

Today, we are at a major turning point. One which will determine whether this seed we planted will grow and flourish, or wither and die. The land we are leasing is for sale and we have very little time to raise the down payment. We’ve come a long way, but we have a long way to go. What would you give to see a sanctuary grow?

He was turned into the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on Dec. 22, 2011. . Andy is a 9 yr. old, neutered, German Shepherd mix who weighs 35 lbs. Seniors have a particularly hard time at the shelter and finding a home.

Poor Andy!

Andy is a sweet, gentle, easy going dog who, once out of his run, becomes very personable and friendly. He really likes people. He is housebroken and his loving spirit is hoping that someone will take him away from all of this sadness. His previous “owner” said that he was the best dog ever, she just couldn’t afford keeping him any longer.

The shelter scares Andy and that is why he hides out in the back of his run. This is not the life that he wants or that he remembers. He remembers having a person. He remembers having a warm bed and being best friends with a human who promised to take care of him forever. That is what we want for Andy.

Please help Andy! He needs a home before it is too late. Please adopt this wonderful boy.

My name is Candy and I am a spayed mixed terrier and about as cute as can be, if I do say so myself. A lady never likes to divulge her age but I will tell you one thing, I am probably not 13 yrs. old like they say I am. I have the spirit and energy of a pup!

The sad part of my story is that I was picked up as evidence in a humane investigation. My life has not been very happy but I still have a great attitude. I would love any family that decided to give an "old girl" like me a chance for a happy life.

When I was brought to the shelter on Oct. 22, 2011 I only weighed 13 lbs. and was very emaciated. The shelter fed me good food and now I weigh 20 lbs. I'm actually getting a little chunky which no girl likes to admit but I haven't had much exercise here at the shelter.

A couple of the volunteers recently gave me a bath and boy, did I ever love that. I kept kissing the person who was holding me because I was so happy.

I am also a happy girl when I get to go into the play yard to run and sniff around. I am housebroken so the yard is nice for that too.

Hey, I also know how to sit on command, plus I have a very soft mouth when I take treats.

It's true that older dogs like me have a hard time finding a home, but I hope people can see what a cool dog I am. I promise that I would be very loving and sweet. I would even sit in your lap and watch T.V. with you if that would make you happy. PLEASE ADOPT ME, you won't be sorry!

This story is written by a woman who wants to help Derek but needs a rescue to pull him out of the shelter and assist in finding a permanent home. Derek is a sweet but very scared dog that isn't doing well in the shelter. Please help!

"My temporary name is Derek. I am a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix, approximately 7 years old, and have been at the WLA Animal Shelter since September 18, 2011.

For over 90 days I have been in the same kennel – across from the cat room -- hiding as far in the corner of the bedding cave as possible. Around my 80thday of hiding in my kennel cave, a lady came to find her lost cat and stopped to see my picture on the front of my kennel. Every few days she comes back to talk to me but I am too terrified to come out and meet her. The noise in this shelter gives me anxiety and I am too scarred to find out what is going on around me. Therefore, I just stay in my cave, hide from the noise, and stay invisible from all the people going by.

So far it’s been working and aside from this lady no one ever sees me. Near my kennel are two gates that slam all day long, which also frightens me.The woman who took an interest in me decided to bring some roast beef to see if she could get me to come out of my hiding place. She throws the meat into my kennel, close to the bedding area, but I will only come out when she is not looking. One of the shelter staff persons decided to help the lady get a look at me and came behind my kennel. When I hear a staff person behind my kennel I know I have to get out. When the lady saw me come out of the cave I tried to run back in and the gate hit me in nose. I just curled up in the corner of the concrete run, closest to my cave, and trembled until she told the shelter man to open the gate and let me back into my hiding place.

One day, after many visits, another Shelter staff man decided to take me to the visiting area to meet the lady. It was my first time out in the sunshine in over two months! I was well behaved and did not pull on the rope leash or misbehave in any way. The Shelter man noticed many good things about me and thought I would be a very nice dog who could live in an apartment with cats. He made this assessment based on seeing me interact with a very small dog next to the visiting area. I went up to smell he little dog and I did not display any aggression towards him. I jumped up on the park bench and let everyone pet me. I looked all around with interest through the fence to the parking area.

Perhaps someone I know will come back to get me but I’m losing hope and am now very depressed, losing my desire to eat from constantly being scared.The next day the lady came again and they took me back to the visiting area. Again, I was alert and well behaved but after a few minutes I had to go back to my hiding place. The lady noticed that I have pressure sores on my elbows from laying on the concrete in my kennel, so she bought me a nice bed from Costco and makes sure that I still have my bed every time she comes to visit.The lady's husband is not sure that someone big like me should live in an apartment.

I just wish someone would take me out of this shelter to some place quiet where I could heal emotionally. I am so very scared at the shelter and too afraid to try and make friends. I just want to be someplace warm and quiet with someone who will try and find out what a nice dog I am.Will someone please help me get out of here?"

I hate to have this news to share, but Queenie was returned after 1 day due to one of the dog's that lived in the home didn't like her and started a fight. No dogs were hurt. I was just a puppy when I became part of a family. That was 5 years ago and I was so happy and then my world came to a crashing end. The people that I loved so much decided to get a divorce and I no longer fit into their plans so they brought me to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. This was back on Sept. 17, 2011. I miss them and still look for them but they are not coming back.

I am a spayed Labrador retriever/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. The people who used to be my family described me as friendly with everyone including other dogs. They said that I was "very nice and a smart dog".

The volunteers at the shelter are now my best friends. They agree that I am a very nice dog. They take me into the yard where I love to play especially with the larger size balls. I know how to sit, shake and lay down and because I love treats, there's isn't much that I can't learn. I need to work on focusing more but when I get out into the yard I forget myself and just enjoy being free again. I get along just fine with the other dogs so that is a real plus for me and hey guess what? I am housebroken!

I need a home of my own and someone to love me again and let me show them what a good, loving dog I can be. It wasn't my fault that I ended up at the shelter. I would be such a great friend to some lucky person. Please help me find a home!!

Update 12/19: Brownie was sadly euthanized due to a serious case of pneumonia. In Brownie's honor, the $400 collected for his rescue will now be applied to another wonderful dog at WLA whose status is urgent: Queenie A1250868.

This dog desperately needs a home for the holidays! He's a very nice dog that has some medical issues that could be managed with pain meds. He's really sweet and the volunteers are trying really hard to save him. Look at that face, it's enough to make you cry!

Here is the plea going out from the WLA shelter New Hope coordinator:

A1266551 - Brownie, 6 year old, male, Chow Chow Mix.

Brownie came to the shelter as a stray after he was picked up by one of our Animal Control Officers.

After showing lameness in his hind legs, he was sent for X-Rays. Poor Brownie has quite a few things going on in his hind area that prevent him from getting around with ease. He has lumbar sacral spondylosis, bilateral mild hip displaysia and degenerative joint disease.

Brownie needs a great home where he can be an indoor dog, with a comfy bed and provided the pain management he needs to make life just a little more comfortable. Please help Brownie find that! A concrete kennel is no place for him.

Patch is a sweet, gentle dog who has outstayed his welcome at the WLA Animal Shelter but as long as he is still alive THERE IS HOPE. $500 towards an approved rescue has been pledged. Additional pledges are needed and most welcome. Mirja at MBishop355@aol.com will track pledges.

Patch is a 5 yr. old, neutered, white Pit Bull type dog who was brought to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on July 27, 2011 as a stray. He is a medium sized dog but he is clearly underweight weighing in at 56 lbs. when he first came to the shelter.

He is a calm, easy going dog who is good on leash. He comes when called and knows the sit command. He is easy to collar and walks through the kennel without any difficulty. He is loves his treats and has a very gentle mouth. He is an affectionate dog but sometimes seems lost in the shelter environment and becomes distracted almost as if remembering where he used to be when he had a home. His ears are cropped close to the head so you have to wonder what kind of a home it was that Patch had and whether it was worthy of his love.

Patch has been at the shelter for a long time so his days are clearly numbered. He is a mild mannered, very easy to manage dog who would make a great companion for just about anyone. He has so much love to give some lucky person. He is a favorite of one of the volunteers who spends as much time with him as he can and who has nothing but positive comments to make about his behavior.

Please help Patch find his forever home. This wonderful boy does not deserve to die in the shelter. Please help Patch!

Kane is SWEET as sugar!

Kane is a beautiful 5 yr. old brown and white, neutered pit bull terrier. He was surrendered to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on July 5, 2011 after his owner lost his home. It wasn't Kane's behavior or anything about this wonderful boy that brought him to the animal shelter. He just didn't have a home anymore.

Kane is described by those who have worked with him as a "gentle giant." He responds well to correction. He walks extremely well on leash and shows no aggression towards the other dogs when walking through the kennel. He is a little shy at first but warms up quickly. He knows sit and knows how to give his paw. He is not reactive towards other dogs but needs a little work on focusing. He is housebroken.

SHADOW IS MY NAME

This handsome boy's name is Shadow. He is a 1 yr. 3 mo. old neutered black Labrador Retriever mix who has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since Sept. 27, 2011. He weighs in at a lean 58 lbs. and has a beautiful shiny black coat.

Black dogs have a tough time in animal shelters. They are often the last dogs to be adopted and the first dogs to be put down because of weird superstitions that people may have against a "black" dog. Of course, in reality, black dogs are as wonderful and precious as any dog would be.

Shadow is absolute proof of that. He is so eager to please his person. He is easy to collar and walks well on leash including walking through the kennel. He doesn't react to the other dogs barking at him as he passes by. He is a great dog in both the small yard and the large play yard. He likes to play ball but it is not his favorite thing to do. Most of all he likes to hang out with his person. He recently passed the temperament testing done by K9 Connection. He gets along with other dogs and has enjoyed playing in the yard with one of his shelter buddies.

Shadow is a great dog who is eager to have his own bed, his own home and most of all his own person. He would make a loyal and loving companion for some lucky person. Please don't let the shelter be the last home for this beautiful, black dog named Shadow.

Sandy, A#1219443 back at the shelter for no reason except for her breed.

Sandy is a 3 yr. old spayed Staffordshire Terrier who has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since Oct. 9, 2011. Sandy and her 10 puppies originally came to the shelter on June 4, 2011.

Sandy or momma as we lovingly called her was a good mom who cared for her pups until it was time to separate from them. She cried and tried to reach them when they were put in a separate run. She had to be moved to a different part of the shelter where she could not see them. Her pups were all adopted very quickly and it was our wish that Sandy too would find a good home.

In Sept. the volunteers and staff were thrilled when a family came to the shelter to see her and decided to adopt her. It was our hope with Sandy, as it is with all of our dogs, that she find a good home with people who would love and care for her. Sadly for Sandy that did not happen. She was returned by the adoptive family because the landlord did not approve. They described Sandy as friendly with everyone and a good dog which we all knew from her previous time at the shelter. Sandy loves to play with her toys but more than anything she loves her people. She is good with other dogs and she is just a fun dog to be around as can be seen in this video.

Oh no, poor Charlie is back at the shelter! Poor guy...

It may be that Charlie needs some training. Whoever is lucky enough to adopt this great guy needs to know that training will be involved. Most dogs don't come home all perfectly trained and it's only fair to assume that training is mandatory to have the dog that you want. No one wants an ill-behaved dog, right?!!! You can't blame Charlie that no one ever took the time to shape him into the best dog he can be, that's up to the guardian to make sure that happens!!

Laurel having a good night's sleep!

Just had to post the latest on Laurel's journey to a safe haven. Laurel spent this weekend at adoption events with her new rescue org. Ace of Hearts has weekly adoption events at Petco in West Hollywood on Doheny Blvd.

Laurel is sleeping so soundly now that she's out of the shelter. I even hear there is a video of her snoring! Okay, not so lady-like but what the heck, she deserves a little R&R after what she's been through!

Rosie, the lovely senior girl waiting for you at the WLA shelter

A picture is worth a thousand words! What else could one say about this picture of Rosie. Rosie is a beautiful 9 yr. old spayed Labrador retriever mix who was surrendered to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on Oct. 15, 2011. For Rosie life as she knew it came to an abrupt halt. She had a family once. For years she belonged and felt loved and then suddenly the family was gone.

Rosie is a sweet, gentle dog. She is easy to walk through the kennel and does not react to the other dogs. She sits on command and is probably housebroken. She has a very soft mouth when she takes treats. She loves belly rubs and anyone who takes time to rub her tummy will be her lifelong friend. If you sit on a bench she will climb up and curl up next to you. She just wants her own human companion. Sometimes she wiggles her hindquarters from side to side she is so happy to have someone pay attention to her.

Rosie's tail is quite amazing in its appearance and has to be seen rather than described. The mystery deepens but it's a good reason to come and see this wonderful, senior dog who deserves a warm place to rest but who still has plenty of life left and would love to be best friends with humans who would commit to her and give her that forever home that she so much deserves.

Laurel is a sweet young female who was found wandering the streets of South L.A. She was dirty and skinny and had had pups recently. It was thought that she may have been used for breeding and then simply thrown away. She was found "just hanging around someone's workplace". She was happy to have someone pay attention to her and be nice to her. She made herself at home and was ready to stay. She is described as "very friendly" and "not happy" which is no big surprise. She is very people friendly and loyal and when taken into the playyard she preferred to stay with the people looking for attention and companionship. In her run she wiggled her bottom and wagged her tail whenever anyone stopped by to see her. She is a sweet, wonderful dog who needs a chance to live and to be loved.

She is available now at the West LA Shelter on Pico Blvd.

Life isn't fair!!! Those words were never more true than theyare for Babs, a 4 yr. old brown and white spayed Staffordshire Terrier. Babs never bit anyone, she didn't run away,she didn't destroy the furniture, she didn't eat the cat. She was a great family member! She was loyal and loving towards her familyand other dogs. She had her favoritetoys to play with and she had a family who loved her. Life was good!

But life isn't always fair and thelife that Babs loved came to an abrupt end in Sept. 2010 when Babs's owners losttheir home. They relinquished her to theWest Los Angeles Animal Shelter. Thepeople and home that she had loved so much were gone but Babs did not giveup. Dogs have amazing resilience. Withtail wagging and a big smile on her face Babs greeted everyone who passed byher run.

The weeks flew by. People looked but no one stopped. No one wanted her. The end of her time at the shelter was fastapproaching when after 6 months of waiting a miracle happened and she was adopted. The story should have ended there but againas I said before "life is not fair."

In June 2011, Babs's new family moved.Apparently she did not fit into their plans so back to the shelter she came. The wait fora home started all over again.

Since being at the shelter, Babs has become avaluable member of K9 Connection. She is working with high-risk kids while she is a shelter resident.

It is now October 2011 and Babs isstill waiting. For Babs, life indeed hasnot been fair. She's a beautiful, smart,happy dog who loves to play and who loves people. Even though she is not an aggressive dog, she has lunged at a few dogs during her K9 outings. The K9 Connection staff who know Babs so wellhave commented that the stress from being in the shelter is taking its toll onBabs. Their suggestion is that when she is adopted, a one dog house would be best for a "low level handler" but if adopted by an intermediate handler, they could handle this "kink" just fine. They further believe that with a normal life,some rest, confidence and good handling this behavior would resolve quickly.

Please consider Babs as your new family member! She deserves a break!

HERE COMES CHARLIE, THE LOW RIDER!!!

Put together a yellow Labrador Retriever and a Basset Hound and what do you get??? You get Charlie! Charlie was found as a stray on Sept. 5, 2011 and has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since that date. He is about one year old and has been neutered.

Charlie makes you smile! He has the face and body of a Lab and the legs of a Basset Hound. He is a high energy dog whose greatest joy in life is to play with a ball or any toy that he can find. Charlie loves people and he expresses himself like any other Lab. through his beautiful light brown eyes. Charlie is the kind of dog that you look at twice to make sure that you really saw what you saw. He is an amazing dog.

Charlie is a strong dog and will need appropriate handling. He will also need some training to be the best dog he can be. For example, when walking through the shelter Charlie does react to the other dogs who are barking and jumping as he passes by. It's hard to tell if he has real "issues" with other dogs or if it's the environment. Shelter life is stressful for the dogs in so many ways. However, Charlie is still young and has a lot of potential!

Please help Charlie find his forever home. Not only is he a loving, people-oriented dog but he will be a source of conversation wherever he goes. He is quite a unique boy and he deserves a home of his own. Please help Charlie, the low rider Lab/Basset Hound! -- Mirja Bishop

There's a sadness in Sui's brown eyes as she gazes at you through the bars of her run. Sui is a 9 yr. old black brindle and white spayed Pit Bull Terrier.

Sui remembers when she was at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter 3 years ago. She was adopted by a family and it was everyone's hope that this would be the forever home that she longed for. Unfortunately for Sui it did not turn out that way. She was returned to the shelter by her owners on August 4, 2011. No reason was given. She didn't do anything wrong. Perhaps they just didn't want an older dog. Sadly this happens much too often!

Sui is a sweet, gentle dog who walks well on leash. She delights in playing in the plastic swimming pool that is set up in the yard. She walks in it, sits in it and lies down in it. It brings a smile to everyone's face as they watch her run around the yard with the energy of a young dog and then take a flying leap into the pool. The look of sheer joy on her face is hard to miss.

Sui thought that she had her forever home but life dealt her a nasty blow and so here she is back at the shelter again, 3 yrs. older and probably 10 lbs. heavier. She's a good dog. She was always a good dog. She didn't do anything wrong. She needs the love and commitment from a special person who will see what a truly special dog she is.

Please help Sui. She needs a forever home for the remaining years of her life. She's a happy dog who loves life and will bring some lucky person great joy. -- Mirja Bishop

"STARR" - BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL - A Happy Ending Tail!

I just had to post this one! My good friend and colleague Mirja who has been writing up most of the pleas for the dogs depicted on this site, wrote this one about Starr, a nice dog who was literally on death row at the shelter. Starr was a great dog that just wasn't attracting any attention so her hours were now numbered. Talk about drama! When networking shelter dogs, we sometimes don't know what will happen until the last possible moment...

Starr is a beautiful 4 yr. old spayedKorean Jindo who was found as a stray and who has called the West Los AngelesAnimal Shelter her home since July 1, 2011. Time is running out for this sweet girl with the lush, soft gold and tancoat.

For reasons that are hard tounderstand she is largely ignored at the shelter. She sits at the front of her run lookingquietly at everyone who passes by. Shedoesn't jump, she doesn't bark, she just sits and stares perhaps resigningherself to the fact that no one will ever want her and yet Starr is a sweet dogwho deserves a home and the love of a special person.

Starr walks well on leash. She knows her commands and sits, goes downand gives her paw without hesitation. She has a gentle mouth and loves her treats. She would rather be close to her person thanchase a ball or run around but that could well be because shelter life hastaken the spirit out of her.

Please help this special dog find herforever home before time runs out for her. Please don't let her die at the shelter.

Addendum: Whoever said miracles don't happen will change their mind when they readthe ending to this story. After working on this story today Oct. 13, 2011, I emailed K, my favorite A.C.T., at theshelter to ask her if she knew how Starr was with other dogs. I was anxious to start networking her feelingfairly certain that her time at the shelter was almost up. K emailed me back that a woman had come tothe shelter today and was interested in Starr but wanted to check with herhusband. How often do people say theywill come back and then never do?

K put a memo in the computer but then she learned that Starr was to be euthanized today! Thanks to K's notice, Starr was given until the end of theday. If the people did not return today shewould be euthanized. But the stars aligned for Starr and they didreturn. Starr was adopted!!! Thank you K for making this miraclehappen. Without her intervention Starrwould have been euthanized before the people could return. Oh mygoodness!!!! -- Mirja

Sandy is a 3 yr. old spayed Staffordshire Terrier who has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since Oct. 9, 2011. Sandy and her 10 puppies originally came to the shelter on June 4, 2011.

In Sept. the volunteers and staff were thrilled when a family came to the shelter to see her and decided to adopt her. It was our hope with Sandy, as it is with all of our dogs, that she find a good home with people who would love and care for her. Sadly for Sandy that did not happen. She was returned by the adoptive family because the landlord did not approve. They described Sandy as friendly with everyone and a good dog which we all knew from her previous time at the shelter.

Meet Stanley. He's been at the shelter since 8/13/11. He had a neglectful owner and was being held as "evidence". He has demodex mange and needs out NOW! Please network this boy. He's great with people and seems to be unreactive to dogs - even with a yappy chihuahua attacking the meet and greet fenced area he just walked up to the fence sniffed him and then turned away.

I think he looks like there is some Shar Pei in there too!

"Please help me! I am going crazy in this cage". If Jaz could talk those would be the words coming out of her mouth. Being caged and never getting out to run or play is taking its toll on this beautiful one year old spayed German Shepherd. She literally tries to climb the walls of her cage in an effort to get out. It is a heartbreaking sight to see her trying to crawl her way up and out. Jaz was adopted once but was returned because she was reportedly aggressive towards the owner's other dog however at the shelter she has been OK with other dogs but under supervision. She has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since August 21, 2011.

Jaz is described as smart and a dog who knows her commands. She is food motivated but has a soft mouth. She is described as a little shy but is a good dog who is stunningly beautiful.

Shelter life is hard on any dog but for many German Shepherds being caged for days and weeks on end creates stress that can be seen in their behavior. Jaz needs a home like every shelter dog. Please help her find her forever home. (written by Mirja Bishop)

Dear Friends and Rescuers,

Anza Animal Friends is a large-scale dog rescue that is very sadly having to close its doors suddenly due to a family emergency. Because of this we need safe, solvent and enriching placements for our beloved rescue dogs. All of these dogs were at one time either dumped by their former owner, found wandering the streets or were within hours of being killed in an Animal Shelter. Anza Animal Friends Dog Rescue gave these dogs a 2nd chance when there was none. Now that the rescue needs to close, these dogs desperately need responsible placement and time is of the essence. There were abandoned once….WE CANNOT LET THEM DOWN AGAIN.

We have reached out to the rescue community, as well as individuals, to help us find rescues that could take them in or private adopters to give them a home. Since August 26th we’ve found amazing homes for 9 dogs! The rescue community has been amazing with stepping in to help network these dogs and we have commitments for about 25-30 more and are still networking the remaining dogs in need.

At this time we are reaching out for much needed support. We are trying to raise $6000 minimum to meet the dogs’ needs. This will get us started but even after the 25-30 that are pending rescue/adoption we will still need funding to support the remaining dogs while we continue to network them into homes and/or other rescues.

Below is a basic breakdown of where the funds will be applied:
-Dog food– There haven’t been any food drops and we go through 4 large bags everyday.
-$300-500 for an on-site vet visit
-$150 Rabies vaccine vial
-$150 Heart-worm test kit
-$1000-2000 + for vetting (i.e. Rabies boosters, Heart Worm tests where required, Health Certificates, Spays and Neuters)
-$3000 in gas for the 2 transports thus far scheduled ($1000 for the Pacific Northwest transport and $1500-2000 for the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan transport)
-Vehicle rental and/or a paid animal rescue transporter (if you have access to a cargo van and/or bus that can hold large crates that you can lend please let us know and we can save $ on vehicle rental fees as this gets very expensive)

Creative thinking and ideas to save money are welcomed however time is of the essence.

In closing I invite you to please view the adoptable dogs in the albums (links provided at the bottom). Every dog in this album has it’s own story and often there is a lot of sadness behind the eyes of an abandoned dog. But these dogs now have hope where once there was none. They are all on different parts of their journey and it’s up to us to be their stewards and see them through to a rich and wonderful life….the life that all animals deserve.

"He needs love! He's large but gentle and he needs love!" Those were the words that Rudy's owner wrote when he relinquished Rudy to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on July 19, 2011. He was ill and could no longer care for his 6 yr. old Belgian Sheepdog. How heartbreaking that must have been for him and for Rudy who now hopes that someone will see what a magnificent dog he is and want him for their own.

Rudy is a big boy weighing in at 96 lbs. He has a lush, silky coat and his recent visit to the groomer brought out the shine and luster in that coat. He is a breathtakingly beautiful dog who is described as being friendly with people, dogs and cats. He loves people and is happiest when he can be with his human friends. He is exceedingly gentle and well behaved in the play yard. He loves to be brushed but more than anything he just likes to hang out.

Rudy waits patiently for the special someone who will look at him and know that he is the dog for them. He needs a forever home. Please help Rudy!

I'm back!

Sorry to all who have followed my blog in the past. I've been going through a lot of personal transitions and have not had the bandwidth to update the blog. Well, now that I'm settling in and getting back to better than normal, I'm ready to start blogging again!

Lot's of changes and developments have been going on in Los Angeles' shelters and rescues. Best Friends has just got the go ahead to open an adoption center at the Mission Hills LAAS center. That could be a great thing for LA. Let's hope so!

Today, I have a great dog that my friend and shelter volunteer, Mirja has written about. She has contributed so many dog profiles to this blog in the past and I hope that continues. Thanks Mirja!

THE STORY OF A SENIOR DOG!

This is the story of so many senior dogs. Once upon a time he had a family. For 5 years he knew who they were and he knew who he was. He had a home and a bed of his own and he thought that he was important to them but he was wrong! On August 1, 2011 they turned their 12 yr. old dog in to the West Los Angeles Shelter. They said they were moving and they didn't want him anymore! He never will understand why he couldn't be included in those plans. He became yet another disposable senior dog!

Mac is a 12 yr. old neutered German Shepherd/Staffordshire terrier mix. His coat is brown brindle and he is quite thin as you can see in this very unflattering photograph of him. He weighs only 40 lbs. so he needs some good food and treats to help fatten him up.

Mac is a sweetheart of a dog. He is very friendly and he gets along real well with people and with other dogs. He is very playful and responsive and as a bonus he is even housebroken.

Mac, like any senior dog, yearns to be a part of a family. He dreams of spending the last days of his life in the comfort of a loving family and a soft bed. Sadly his age and his breed may not make those dreams come true but he keeps hoping and he will never give up. His tail keeps on wagging. Surely there is someone out there who will look at his sweet face and fall in love with him and then he will have a home again - this time forever! Please don't let the shelter be his last home - please!!

Regal senior dog Nicky is looking to Chillax with you! He's a GREAT guy!

Nicky had a nice simple life in South LA, his owner, a retired woman walked him on the same block near Central Ave twice a day every day until one day she stopped. Her neighbor was concerned and found Nicky abandoned in the yard. The owner had gone into the hospital and the adult children didn’t want Nicky. He went to what was supposed to be a temporary home with 15+ other dogs, some very aggressive. Sadly, Nicky was attacked and almost killed by one of the dogs. With no money and no hope, Downtown Dog Rescue paid for three surgeries to piece together Nicky’s neck. He is completely healed, amazingly is fine with other dogs including small dogs, he just doesn’t want to be bothered or jostled around by other dogs. I just don't get it!!! How could a dog as cute as I am still be at the animal shelter? I just don't understand. I was found as a stray on Oct. 5, 2010 and was brought to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter where I still live. Every day I hope that someone will see what a great dog I am and will give me that forever home that I dream about.
I am 2 yrs. old and in the prime of life. I am black and white as you can see from my photograph. They tell me that I am a Border Collie/Dalmatian mix which gives me pretty good credentials wouldn't you say? I have been spayed, of course, so I am ready to go.

There are many volunteers at the shelter who really like me. One of them even calls me a "great dog". Most of the things they say about me are very positive and make me proud. For instance I am described as sweet and easy to handle. I am so happy when I get to play in the yard. I have a lot of energy so I love to run around and stretch my legs. I sit on command and try my best to respond well to correction. I am a pretty strong girl and sometimes will pull on my leash but if you tell me to stop I promise I will try to obey. I am very affectionate especially with people. I get along OK with big dogs but little dogs spook me so it's better that I not be around them. Oh I forgot to tell you that I love treats so I can learn just about anything if there's a treat in it for me.

Now after reading this you must agree that I am a pretty special dog so why am I still here? I don't know but it scares me because I don't want to die in the shelter. I am a good dog who loves people and I would make someone so happy if they would only give me a chance. Please help me! Don't let me die! I need a "forever home".

Beautiful Simone A1138137: a great girl OUT of time at West LA

In shelters across the country black dogs have a difficult time finding forever homes. "Black dog syndrome" where people attach superstitious beliefs onto dogs like Simone results in these dogs frequently being the first ones to be euthanized. Simone is a great BLACK dog who deserves a good life. She is a 6 yr. old spayed American Staffordshire bull terrier who was found as a stray on August 1, 2010 and now calls the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter her home.

The volunteers who have worked with Simone have nothing but good things to say about her. She is described as being very attentive. She responds well to voice commands. She likes her treats and knows "sit and come". She walks well on leash and loves to play fetch. She is the happiest in the play yard where she can run and be free for a few brief moments. She has met both large and small dogs and has been fine with them. She was recently shown to two different families with children and did very well with both an 8 yr. old and a 10 yr. old child.

A "very great dog" was the comment made by one of the volunteers. Simone would fit into just about any kind of family situation. She is a sweet, friendly, loving dog who happens to be black. Finding a "forever home" before her time at the shelter runs out is her fervent wish and one that everyone who knows Simone hopes comes true.

She has a glimmer of hope -- a wonderful rescue that might take her if we can raise donations quickly. SCANDAL IN THE SHELTER. WHO WAS LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER?
We'll never know -- but we do know that Lady's honor was compromised before she arrived. However, that's in her secret past and now she faces an even greater embarrassment. Word has spread that our lovely, luscious Lady is the longest resident at South L.A. and, thus, in grave danger. What a horror!!!! Such a wonderful girl. So young. So gifted. So delectable. And such a good kisser (oops, that's where she went wrong the first time). Lady (A1190519, 43 pounds) is a happy, playful pup -- watch her video and see.

TULIP'S FOSTER FELL THROUGH!!!! WE WERE INFORMED LATE LAST NIGHT THAT TULIP'S FOSTER WAS IN A BAD CAR ACCIDENT AND SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FOSTER TULIP.

This poor dog was ALMOST OUT OF THE SHELTER but when we went to pull her they found a micro chip! So Tulip was put on hold while they tried to contact her former owner's. But the numbers were disconnected, mail returned and no one that we can find missing Tulip....now that she is available to be pulled her foster falls through!!! On top of it, WLA has a temporary moratorium volunteers walking dogs over 20 lbs so while already stressed, you can imagine what she's going through now. The new hope coordinator at WLA Stated:

Who wouldn't want this wonderful dog? Once at the WLA shelter and now with Angel City Pit Bull rescue, Olive (formerly Sweetie) is available for adoption. She is a wonderful little girl!

Little Olive has had a tough run up til now. After being rescued from a chemical fire at a meth lab (while pregnant!) and parting ways with her puppies post delivery (sadly not all of them made it, but the ones who did were adopted!)-- Olive spent 5 months at the shelter. But she was kept alive so long because everyone who met her at the shelter fell completely in love with her. She's that sweet. And, of course, because she's the EASIEST dog in town. Olive is so laid-back, she'd be perfect for anyone. At a sprawling estate or with a single apartment dweller, she's so low-maintenance, you might forget she's even there...until she arrives to shower you with kisses and love. Great with all people and all dogs, even overzealous puppies! Gets along great with everyone at her day care.

K.C. (Kirby Cuddles, A1197385, 1 year old, all of 8 pounds) is a medical staff favorite. He has charmed them with his extra-cheery personality -- in the face of innumerable broken bones. Maybe the x-ray machine was playing tricks on them -- but it seems that this little fellow has old fractures throughout his small frame -- femur, tibia, ilium, pubis, sacro-iliac and don't forget, acetabular. And yet he gets around like a speed demon, never complaining. Will he need surgery? Most likely. He's only a year old and has a very busy schedule ahead, romping and running. He'll have to be in tip-top shape for those activities. Oh, and we can't forget to mention his unusual brindle coat!!! It was thought he was just dirty until shaved down and the markings appeared! Let's save this sweetheart who was ignored and mistreated by some loser owner who must have known K.C. had been hurt. We can raise donations for a qualified rescue to get K.C. to an orthopedic vet. When Stella (A1195004, 6 years old, a mere 9 pounds -- and she could lose some weight!) arrived at the shelter, so little and so defenseless in a world that was completely overwhelming to her, she was beyond terrified. What could she do but put up a ferocious front -- show her teeth and snarl at anyone who approached her. But, with kindness and a gentle hand, Stella stopped snarling -- and just shook instead. And soon, with walks around the block -- being held, she won't walk on a leash yet -- she came to trust us. It's hard to describe that first tail wag, that first kiss she gave. It was so unexpected and so overpoweringly wonderful in its innocence. Watching her video you understand that Stella was someone's lap dog. Her nails have never been clipped and she has no idea what a string around her neck means. This girl needs a secure environment -- NOT a boarding kennel -- and she promises you total devotion in return. Stella enjoys the company of other little doggies. Lux-A1165613 -Desperately needs a RESCUE! Please help!

She is NOT a biter... So far no one has come forward for this unlucky little girl
Here is exactly what happened. Lux was always happy and well behaved on her walks. One day, because she was pulling on the leash, the volunteer did the training technique of quickly turning her around (360 degree) in the opposite direction.

There was a jogger ridiculously too close and practically on top of them and BEHIND them, when they turned the jogger was running directly at Lux and right on top of her! Lux was startled and she SNAPPED at the jogger, did not bite her. They stopped and Lux sat quietly and patiently while the jogger examined herself. The jogger's clothes were a very thin material and there was a SCRATCH...no broken skin. Everything was fine and the jogger continued jogging BUT now Lux has a "bite record"

She has never bitten before or since. The volunteers love her but the staff I hear is not that crazy about her, because when she first came in she hid and cringed in the back of the cage (she still does). Then she developed the LEARNED behavior from the other dogs in the kennel of running up to the front of the cage and barking at them.

With the volunteers that she knows she runs up and wags her tail happily and hopes it's time for a walk...BUT Lux will NEVER go for another walk and she will not get out alive, because now she has a "bite" history, unless a Rescue takes her...all because of the stupidity of the jogger, which Lux will have to pay for with her young life.

LOOK AT THAT HAPPY SWEET FACE. Of course she needs socialization, but the volunteer told us that she is just fine once she is outside of the Shelter...a place that she may never live to see.

This dog is RESCUE ONLY and she needs help desperately. PLEASE HELP by circulating this information!

Moose is a wonderful dog our family rescued from the North Central Animal Shelter in December. He is approximately 1 ½ years old, microchipped, neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations.

Moose loves people! He is great on a leash, sits, downs, shakes. Although he gets along with most dogs, he should be an only dog. Moose has been living with 2 male dogs about his size and he started going after one of them. He may get along with females but this has not been tested.

We are heartbroken that we cannot keep him. If you can open up your heart and home, he’ll be a loving companion. We think he is a terrier/lab mix. Moose weighs about 86 +/- pounds.

VILLALOBOS RESCUE CENTER IN JEOPARDY OF CLOSING ITS DOORS. http://www.vrcpitbull.com/

As most of you know, we are in the process of building a new paradise up in the quaint little town of Tehachapi. Known for its adorable antique stores and that awesome "choo choo" train, it was the country living that was so appealing. So to move my program up into the secluded mountains, felt just right.

Never in my dreams would I think that such an angry and hateful woman co-existed there. I've never met this woman and yet a few days ago she sent out this letter. In it she accuses me of "stealing government money" and basically compares me to the likes of the people involved in the Diane Whipple mauling. Never once did she ask me or come to me with concerns as some of the other nice folk up there have. How sad is it that she complains about the conditions of their dirt roads being destroyed, when I offered to cover ALL EXPENSES so as not to have the local residents have the upkeep come out of their pockets anymore. This woman lives nowhere near the new place yet she, for some reason wants to shut down an organization that helps men and women get on the right track to life, counsels troubled youth, has Girl and Boy Scouts visit on a regular basis and was willing to become the "unofficial" Tehachapi Animal Shelter and handle the stray dog population while attempting to find any "lost owners. We had also set up a "Rewards Program" that we were willing to share with the local businesses, that would've given them more income and also bring in more donations for us.

I don't know why this woman is doing this, but if she is successful in her angry quest, we will not be able to operate as a rescue any longer. We are doing everything by the book by applying for the proper permits, etc. We have our county hearing on March 10th, 7:00 p.m. in Bakersfield. If you would like to send a letter/email of support or even show up, please email us at: pitbullrescue13@gmail.com and we'll send out more information. Your letters have to be received by Feb. 22nd. Please be polite and professional in your response. Remember this is not an issue with the county.

In addition to all of the above, at this time Villalobos will have to partially suspend many of its services because we have to now focus on combating this issue. Phone calls and emails will go unanswered for a period of time or at least until we can deal with all of this.

This battle is being fueled by this woman, not any county entities. We appreciate any and all support. Many lives depend on it. We will no longer be able to save more dogs or continue our free spay/neuter program if she succeeds in her vicious war with us. To even think about all those dogs having to be homeless once again is just heartbreaking. Of course to think of a human being so heartless is even worse.

Apple is in danger and needs help today!

Apple (A1168206, 4 years old, long-fuzzy hair on a short staffie body) is delectable and utterly wonderful. I've been watching her for two months now -- a momma who came into the shelter with 7 puppies. Initially protective, she was never aggressive but nursed her brood (that looked nothing like her at all) for a month without incident. There was one black pipsqueak, a 1/4 size runt, that caused concern and was sent to foster -- but died unexpectedly 2 days later, bringing tears to the eyes of the Animal Control Officer who had loved her for such a short time, who allowed her to sleep in the pocket of his shirt in order to keep her close -- this little thing having won his heart.

Apple is alone now -- facing the fate of too many momma dogs once their puppies are adopted. This girl and I have been for many walks together; met total strangers at the main shelter to whom she offered her soft and luscious kisses; passed far too many new dogs coming in and far too few going out.

We took Apple to our mobile last weekend. She was loving and sweet with everyone she met -- except one bigger alpha female. Today I got word that, upon meeting little dogs, she wanted to NUZZLE THEM -- like the puppies that she nursed for weeks. Apple is learning to accept larger dogs and has now been kenneled with one. It took her a few moments to get used to being sniffed -- but she has been fine since then. Those of you who know me understand that I am beyond cautious in my recommendations. I believe in Apple -- I want to see this dog bring happiness to whoever saves her life. SHe is mellow and sweet. Someone suggested that she be a therapy dog -- could absolutely see that.

When I received word today that her time was critical, I panicked. I can't look at this face without smiling; without remembering her jumping up to greet me in complete abandon and delight; without remembering how it feels to put my arms around her thick neck and very wide middle (she must have gained 10 pounds while at the shelter!!!). Apple's portrait brightens up this page as I type. She brought life into this world. Apple needs someone to give her the gift of life now. Who knows what the real story may be but she is most definitely covered with scars. How could someone, right before Xmas no less, dump their dog of 7 years at the shelter for no good reason??? The irony that his name is "favorite" doesn't escape me... It's just so sad. Wow, what a face!!! Maybe I'm a little self absorbed but a dog has to tell it like it is in order to get out of this place. My name is Terry and I am a 3 yr. old neutered Staffordshire Terrier/German Shepherd mix. People, especially those who love me, have been heard to comment on my magnificent face and yes, my eyes are pleading for someone to rescue me from the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter where I have been since August 16, 2010...

I can tell you in all honesty that I am adored by the volunteers who work with me. Would I lie to you? Never!! My volunteer buddies describe me as sweet and a "good boy". They love to spend time with me and, of course, I eat it up. I am a little timid at first but once I get to know you I warm up real fast. I don't like walking through the shelter because all of the barking and chaos makes me a little nervous but once out in the yard I am one very happy boy. I love to run, run, run and if anyone really looks closely they will see that I am laughing. This for me is the good life at least for that moment which sadly will end all too fast.

I am proud to tell you that I walk well on leash and even passing strangers on the street does not bother me at all. I don't react to other dogs because they want homes just like I do. I absolutely love to have my back rubbed but then who doesn't. I wish that I could convince you what a really nice dog I am and how very badly I want a forever home.

Please help me find a home of my own and people who will love me and treat me with kindness. My time is running out. Please help me!!!

P.S. Terry came in with Rocky (black Pit Bull) so evidently he's friendly with other dogs. Of course, proper introduction first!!!

I am a 2 1/2 yr. old unaltered female brown and white Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I was found as a stray on July 20, 2010 so the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter has been my home for much too long.

I have to be honest with you. I am a very high energy dog so I will need a very special person to be my forever friend. One of the volunteers at the shelter who really likes me fills a can with rocks and if I get too excited and pull too hard on my walks, she rattles the can and I shape up just like that. I really do want to please but I am a happy dog and sometimes I get a little too enthusiastic. If I have a chance to exercise and run around for awhile I become very easy to get along with and have actually been described as "well behaved". Can you imagine that?

I know that if I had a chance to be with someone who really loved me and who was willing to work with me and train me I could be the best dog in the world. I love to have my belly rubbed and my rear end scratched but then what dog doesn't like that. I am used to doing my own thing because I never really had anyone who cared about me and worked with me. I know that if that special person came into my life and loved me like I would love them we could do all kinds of amazing things together. I just need a chance to prove that.

Peewee A1123829 has made it this far, don't let him down now!

A1123829 - Pewee, 7 year old, neutered, Chiweenie (Chihuahua/ Dachshund)

Pewee was surrendered to the shelter by his owner because they were moving!! Poor Pewee has been at the shelter since June 14th 2010!!!! Peewee has a deformed nose which may have played a role in his not finding a home by now. :(

All this little man wants for the Holidays is a home to call his own! His demands are minimal... Just a comfy bed, good food and some love. He doesnt require a four legged friend to be... happy so although he does get along with other dogs, he would be quite happy being the only one getting attention.

As you can see from the pictures, Pewee is very tolerant of getting dressed up and posing for his Holiday pics. There is one thing however that Pewee is not so tolerant of... He hates to be picked up!

Please help Pewee find a home for the Holidays!!!

Bertam A1167529 at South LA Shelter is a one-of-a-kind guy

Bertam (A1167529, 6 years old, already neutered) is a one-of-a-kind guy. Everyone who seems him just has to grin. At 70 pounds, feet a bit deformed so that he appears to be standing in an exaggerated ballet position, Bertram is most unusual. This goofy guy has been in ISO as he has some entropion of the eyes and initial concern about his feet. But, he gets around very well -- and will pull you around the block several times if you let him.

It seems that Bertram is quite probably house-trained as he whines to get outside and do his business. We've had him around a couple of other dogs and seems to be OK. In shelters across the country black dogs have a difficult time finding forever homes. "Black dog syndrome" where people attach superstitious beliefs onto dogs like Simone results in these dogs frequently being the first ones to be euthanized.

Simone is a great BLACK dog who deserves a good life. She is a 6 yr. old spayed American Staffordshire bull terrier who was found as a stray on August 1, 2010 and now calls the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter her home. Simone was at the Best Friends Super Adoption event

The volunteers who have worked with Simone have nothing but good things to say about her. She is described as being very attentive. She responds well to voice commands. She likes her treats and knows "sit and come". She walks well on leash and loves to play fetch. She is the happiest in the play yard where she can run and be free for a few brief moments. She has met both large and small dogs and has been fine with them. She was recently shown to two different families with children and did very well with both an 8 yr. old and a 10 yr. old child.

A "very great dog" was the comment made by one of the volunteers. Simone would fit into just about any kind of family situation. She is a sweet, friendly, loving dog who happens to be black. Finding a "forever home" before her time at the shelter runs out is her fervent wish and one that everyone who knows Simone hopes comes true.

We come two to a package. We were found as strays wandering the streets of Los Angeles on June 24, 2010. The West Los Angeles Animal Shelter is now our home but we long to have a home of our own where we could play together and snuggle up at night and keep each other warm. Our names are Buddy and Hobbie.

Buddy is a 3 year old neutered Staffordshire bull terrier. He is very strong and easily excited but he is a sweet dog and is great with his friend Hobie. He is good on leash. He absolutely loves to play with his water dish. His hope is that he and his best friend can be together forever in a new home.

Hobie is a 6 yr. old spayed beagle mix. She is very sweet and loving. She is easy to walk and knows commands like sit. She is treat motivated but somewhat distracted by her environment. She is longing for a home away from the shelter where she and her best friend can run free again.

These two best friends can be adopted separately but it is their hope that someone would see the bond that exists between the two of them and consider adopting both of them.

These guys did great at the Best Friends adoption event but unfortunately found no takers.

Sweet and lovable, these girls, possibly sisters were turned in to the shelter because their family was moving. So sad. These are the sweetest dogs and although they are technically "seniors" they have plenty of life to live. Full of love, both dogs love people of all kinds, young & old. They are fine around other dogs. They were terrific at Best Friends Super Adoption Event and got a lot of attention but they still came back to the shelter.

Tundra and Milo (the correct spelling of the names) should live with someone or a family who wants to spend time with them. A yard would be great but it doesn't have to be large. Tundra is thought to have some pain in her hind quarters, but she is lively and happy. She came in VERY matted so we had to shave down her coat. She's still gorgeous though! :)

I love life!! I am a happy female Rottweiler around 5 yrs. of age who is drop dead gorgeous to look at if I do say so myself. I have been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since July 13, 2010 which is much too long for a cutie like me. I wag my beautiful tail all the time so that people will notice me and see how precious I am.

I have a favorite person at the shelter who spends a lot of time with me. She really loves me and has taught me so much. She introduced me to some other dogs both male and female, big and small and Hey I did just fine thank you very much!!! I even got to go into the cat room and the first time I wasn't too sure about them so I barked but my person told me "No" and I listened to her. The next time I just ignored them. They're only cats after all!!!

I never really learned how to play which makes me sad but I know that I can learn. My lady friend hops around and makes funny noises which I think is so cute. She is so happy when I jump around a little. I know that someday I will have a yard and a special person and then I will play with the best of them. I do have good manners and know sit, lay down and I will even shakes paws with you. I am also housebroken which is something that I am very proud of.

Please don't get all kissy with me right away. Let me sort of check you our first because I need to learn how to trust again and I know that I will if given a chance.

I want my own mommy and daddy so very much. I want a soft, warm bed and a loving pat on the back. I want a special person to love me and give me a "forever home". Please get me out of the cage that I live in now. I am so afraid that one day soon may be my last day. I don't want to die! I want a "forever home". Please help me! Please! I will give you my paw if you do and I will love you forever!!

Little guys who need a hand at WLA: Owen & Pookie

Owen and Pookie are roomies who share a common bond. One is fearful and the other is frustrated and they BOTH are not showing themselves in the Best light.

For one thing, both dogs have the dreaded yellow mark on their kennel cards which is very misleading. Pookie is totally shell shocked having come from a home with an elderly woman who was around all the time. She eventually had to move to senior home where she couldn't have a dog. So poor little Pookie had to come to the shelter.

Pookie is rather introverted so far, but he likes people once he knows them a little. He sits very nicely with me and lets me handle him freely. He's such a little sweetheart, I feel so sorry for him...

Luckily, he likes his roommate Owen and he's doing okay with him other than picking up some "bad" habits like barrier aggression which doesn't look good if you're trying to see the dog's personality! He's not like that at all once out of the kennel, silly dog!

Now Owen, also a total cutie pie, is not really fearful like Pookie, but rather he is frustrated by the inability to interact freely with people. His response to this is barrier aggression which makes him seem kinda scary... But if you take him out of the kennel, he's a doll! He and I ran all around the yard and then I gave him a bath. He did very well on all counts and was extremely cute the whole time. I had no problems with him at all. I couldn't figure out why he's not been adopted!

But then I got some more info on his history... Apparently Owen should be the only dog and isn't great with kids. I haven't seen his bad behavior first hand but apparently he has some issues with becoming possessive of his people and his dog friends. Silly boy. But he's very food motivated and responsive so I'm confident with some training and behavior modification he can improve. He's a very young boy and very trainable. Don't let a good dog mind go to waste!

Owen needs to find a home soon... He's been at the shelter way too long!!!! He's been there since August!!!

EXPANDED FOSTER PROGRAM for LOS ANGELES SHELTER PETS

How You Can Help From Home

Immediate Foster Homes Needed! Our Animal Care Centers are filled to over flowing. You can become a volunteer hero by opening a spare room, garage or basement to an adult dog or cat that will benefit from home care and a break from the shelter! We will assign you a foster animal who matches your lifestyle and animal experience. Time commitment can range from one to eight weeks or occasionally longer. All you need is a room (even a bathroom) and some spare time. We will provide fosters with basic training, all supplies, any necessary medications, and access to someone to answer your questions.

To join the Foster Program, please call our West Valley Animal Care Center at (213) 485-8405, Harbor Animal Care Center at (213) 485-8755 or email ani.webmaster@lacity.org for more information. This is open to anyone who has a big heart and some extra room in your home!

About the Foster Parent Program:

Fostering is a rewarding and enriching experience, and is a great volunteer project for families or individuals who love animals but cannot commit to having a full-time animal companion. Fostering a cat or adult dog does take time, but not as much time as you might think. And a long term commitment isn’t necessary – even if you can only foster one time, you are still doing a wonderful thing by helping a cat or dog in need.

Said General Manager Brenda Barnette, "Our Los Angeles City Animal Care Centers have the most fabulous dogs and cats anywhere. Unfortunately, we have so many wonderful orphaned animals that we have run out of space and are not able to give them the time and attention they deserve while we find them a new home. You can help and you will truly be making a life-saving difference".

Perhaps you have been thinking about adding a dog or cat to your family but you just aren’t ready for the 15-20 year commitment? By fostering, you can provide temporary care for a dog, cat, puppy, or kitten all the while receiving satisfaction in knowing that without your help, these animals would have otherwise had no chance at all. Best of all, adult dogs and cats placed in foster care will be spayed or neutered before they go home with you and we promise to give your foster pet as long as it takes to get him or her a home of her own. More experienced fosters may raise and socialize puppies and kittens until they are 8 weeks old and ready to be spayed or neutered and adopted.

Please consider fostering a pet – you’ll be a hero for the animals and they will love you for it!

Luna (A1159270, 2 years, a sizable 60 pounds) is a miracle dog. This canine is categorically one of the best ever. Gentle, attentive, a great leash walker, an absolute people charmer who loves even the littlest baby, Luna was not ashamed in the least to be kissing another girl in the hallway. When her tongue came out and dusted Bessy's nose and mouth, then washed off every bit of dirt that might have been on or around her snout, everyone around had to giggle. Luna's so big and she's so gentle. Her fawn brindle coat is like velvet to the touch. A perfect therapy dog perhaps -- but definitely a fine example of how the most wonderful dogs wind up at the shelter. She needs to delight many more people -- as soon as possible.
