The Shelter Chronicles: More on the Bemis dogs!
Sophia is a 3 yrs old female Husky Shepherd mix She is extremely gentle and very easy going. Sophia is good with other dogs and just loves being around people. After being in such horrific living conditions, Sophia is just starved for affection. She is spayed and recovering from an ear infection.
Redford is a male neutered Whippet mix and is about 9 yrs old. Don't let his age or the gray on his face fool you, he has the energy of a 5 yr old. Redford walks well on a leash and is just an easy dog to handle all around. He gets along well with other dogs and is extremely obedient with you as he just wants to please. He loves being around people and is very intelligent. Redford constantly gives affection and is always wagging his tail. He is very charming and just too adorable!!
Fay is a female spayed pit mix and is about 4 yrs old. She is VERY SWEET and dog friendly. Fay walks well on a leash, listens obediently, very polite and so affectionate. You could not ask for a more perfect dog...She is one of the best dogs you can ever have!!! Fay is going to a cage free boarding faciilty and really deserves to be in loving foster home. Pls help network for a forever or foster home for Fay.

Sinatra is a male labrador hound mix and is about 4 yrs old. He is super sweet and gets along well with other dogs. He loves affection from people and is just a great dog. Sinatra will howl if he misses you. He is just a total LOVE BUG. Sinatra is learning to be house trained and getting a beautiful skin and coat from the holistic treatments his foster mom is giving him. He walks well on a leash and listens well. Sinatra will make his forever family very happy.

The Shelter Chronicles: Don't let this GSD go to the shelter!
look at this sad little face!This German Shepherd was found Saturday morning collapsed on someone's driveway in Mar Vista. Please contact me directly through this blog if you are interested in adopting this beautiful dog.
At first I thought maybe she had been hit by a car because she wouldn't move anything but her head. Turns out she was starving, dehydrated and had pad wounds from running around so much. After hand feeding her we were able to get her into the car and take her to nearby vet. Turns out she was just terribly neglected, at some point in her life she has had puppies, she has not been neutered, and no she does not have a chip. She has been checked out, dewormed, and tested for parasites and scabbies. She has a clean bill of health as far as that goes. She was suffering from fly strike on her ears and face from being left outside. She is currently on antibiotics to prevent infection while she heals.
We are calling her Kiki, she is very sweet and gentle with my children. She was very afraid of my husband the first day, but when he just sat in a chair it only took her a few minutes to walk over and give him a big lick. Somewhere along the line some man was not nice to her. She has been sleeping at the side of my bed and seems to be good in the house. I had her bathed today and she is a very different dog from the one in my driveway on Saturday.

This video will give you a good idea of what's going on at the Bemis property. Many of these beautiful dogs still need medical care, foster homes, rescue's to sponsor them, etc. Please, whatever you can do to help will be appreciated. For more info, please see www.wuffingtonwag.com.
Please read the plea below written by the people who have done an unbelievable job in making this conviction happen in addition to rescuing the hundreds of dogs that were languishing at the Bemis property. We are asking that a letter be written to the judge in the case requesting that Bemis and Trapani receive the maximum sentence. Sentencing will take place on June 17th. Please circulate this request to everyone you know who cares about justice and animals.
Just so you know, I have witnessed first hand the sickening conditions that these animals have been forced to live under at the hands of Bemis and her cohorts. I can assure you that anything less than the maximum sentence will be a travesty of justice. Please send the message that animal hoarding will not be tolerated!
On May 18th Cynthia Trapani was convicted of 6 counts of ANIMAL CRUELTY. Cynthia Bemis was convicted of 14 counts of ANIMAL CRUELTY. Although these are felony charges and the maximum sentence is approximately 6-9 years, due to prison overcrowding and expected budget cuts, the sentences could well be reduced to time served, in lieu of extended probation and pschological treatment. writing a letter to the District Attorney who succefully prosecuted the Bemis/Trapani case, Andrea Kohler, and to Judge Kenneth Twissleman. The sentencing will be held on June 17th. Recidivism rates are very high for hoarders, probation or not. There are no doubts that Bemis and Trapani will start hoarding more animals the minute they get out. A maximum sentence will send a loud clear message that hoarding will not be tolerated, especially in Counties like Kern, where it is not illegal to keep 300 animals on a 2 acre property. A problem that leads to neglect and cruelty whether it was intended or not.
I dont know about you, but I am sick of cleaning up after these people. For the sake of the animals, lets do all we can to make sure they are given the maximum sentence.

The Shelter Chronicles: Weekend Warriors
Holy moly, where did the weekend go???
Saturday was the SAAFLA garage sale which wasn't a huge success but just enough to help a few more doggies who really need it... Still there is something soooo exhausting about a garage sale!
Sunday, I went up to Mojave to help with the rescue efforts on the Bemis property. Let me tell you, the folks working on this situation have done an incredible job in finding rescues and fosters to help out. Remember, there were hundreds of dogs on the property when the case was going on. Thankfully Cindy Bemis was convicted of 14 counts of animal cruelty (really it should be a lot more) and has been in jail waiting to be sentenced, giving rescues a chance to help the poor animals being held captive on the property. There are probably around 50 or so dogs still roaming around and in kennels. Mostly Shepherds and Chows. For more on the case, see Helen Storey's website The Wuffington Wag. Way to go Helen!!!!
As a result of my busy schedule, I didn't visit the shelter this weekend. :-(
There are some dogs that are RED LISTED right now at the West LA shelter. However the BIG story is that the South LA shelter has been overwhelmed by by relinquishment! Hundreds in the past week! What the hell is going on??? Are people using the shelter as a boarding facility while they go on vacation? It's horrible and the volunteers are reeling... Please do what you can to help out the dogs and volunteers at South LA. They need HELP!
Meanwhile, back at WLA, we don't see to be as swamped; yet, some dogs may be going down. Speaking of dogs who need help...
I don't know any of these 3 dogs very well, but I know that our volunteers have worked with both Cha Cha and Sinatra, two pretty Pitties. They are both people friendly dogs! They are REACTIVE towards other dogs, but we haven't tested them formally. The little MinPin, I'm not really sure why he's in trouble but my guess is someone in medical didn't like his fiesty manner. He still deserves a chance!
A1022481 - Ziggy **RED ALERT**
Ziggy is a 10 year old, male, Miniature Pinscher that came to the shelter as a stray on April 11th 2009.
Ziggy is a character!!! You could almost describe him as having multiple personalities or a cranky old man!!! Loves you one minute, hates you the next!
Despite his age, Ziggy has a lot of pep in his step and spring in his jump. Ziggy has an old injury to his left eye that doesn't seem to bother him.
Weight: 3.4lbs

Sinatra is a 4 year old, male, American Staffordshire.
Sinatra is good with people, however he can not be around other dogs. He is very hard to clam down once he sees another dog therefore because of this we are unable to take him to mobile pet adoptions....
Sinatra is starting to show signs of stress from being at the shelter. He is starting to lose weight and needs to get out ASAP!
West LA - **RED ALERT** 1 year old, female, American Staff. A1022287 - Cha Cha needs to be rescued by 5pm Friday June 12th
Cha Cha is a 1 year old, female, American Staffordshire.
Cha Cha came to the shelter as a stray on April 10th 2009. Although she is sweet with people, she is not good around other dogs and should be kept alone.
