Dear Friends and Rescuers,
Anza Animal Friends is a large-scale dog rescue that is very sadly having to close its doors suddenly due to a family emergency. Because of this we need safe, solvent and enriching placements for our beloved rescue dogs. All of these dogs were at one time either dumped by their former owner, found wandering the streets or were within hours of being killed in an Animal Shelter. Anza Animal Friends Dog Rescue gave these dogs a 2nd chance when there was none. Now that the rescue needs to close, these dogs desperately need responsible placement and time is of the essence. There were abandoned once….WE CANNOT LET THEM DOWN AGAIN.
We have reached out to the rescue community, as well as individuals, to help us find rescues that could take them in or private adopters to give them a home. Since August 26th we’ve found amazing homes for 9 dogs! The rescue community has been amazing with stepping in to help network these dogs and we have commitments for about 25-30 more and are still networking the remaining dogs in need.
At this time we are reaching out for much needed support. We are trying to raise $6000 minimum to meet the dogs’ needs. This will get us started but even after the 25-30 that are pending rescue/adoption we will still need funding to support the remaining dogs while we continue to network them into homes and/or other rescues.
Below is a basic breakdown of where the funds will be applied:
-Dog food– There haven’t been any food drops and we go through 4 large bags everyday.
-$300-500 for an on-site vet visit
-$150 Rabies vaccine vial
-$150 Heart-worm test kit
-$1000-2000 + for vetting (i.e. Rabies boosters, Heart Worm tests where required, Health Certificates, Spays and Neuters)
-$3000 in gas for the 2 transports thus far scheduled ($1000 for the Pacific Northwest transport and $1500-2000 for the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan transport)
-Vehicle rental and/or a paid animal rescue transporter (if you have access to a cargo van and/or bus that can hold large crates that you can lend please let us know and we can save $ on vehicle rental fees as this gets very expensive)
Creative thinking and ideas to save money are welcomed however time is of the essence.
In closing I invite you to please view the adoptable dogs in the albums (links provided at the bottom). Every dog in this album has it’s own story and often there is a lot of sadness behind the eyes of an abandoned dog. But these dogs now have hope where once there was none. They are all on different parts of their journey and it’s up to us to be their stewards and see them through to a rich and wonderful life….the life that all animals deserve.

Rudy-A1233080 Large, but more to love!
"He needs love! He's large but gentle and he needs love!" Those were the words that Rudy's owner wrote when he relinquished Rudy to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on July 19, 2011. He was ill and could no longer care for his 6 yr. old Belgian Sheepdog. How heartbreaking that must have been for him and for Rudy who now hopes that someone will see what a magnificent dog he is and want him for their own.
Rudy is a big boy weighing in at 96 lbs. He has a lush, silky coat and his recent visit to the groomer brought out the shine and luster in that coat. He is a breathtakingly beautiful dog who is described as being friendly with people, dogs and cats. He loves people and is happiest when he can be with his human friends. He is exceedingly gentle and well behaved in the play yard. He loves to be brushed but more than anything he just likes to hang out.
Rudy waits patiently for the special someone who will look at him and know that he is the dog for them. He needs a forever home. Please help Rudy!

I'm back!
Sorry to all who have followed my blog in the past. I've been going through a lot of personal transitions and have not had the bandwidth to update the blog. Well, now that I'm settling in and getting back to better than normal, I'm ready to start blogging again!
Lot's of changes and developments have been going on in Los Angeles' shelters and rescues. Best Friends has just got the go ahead to open an adoption center at the Mission Hills LAAS center. That could be a great thing for LA. Let's hope so!
Today, I have a great dog that my friend and shelter volunteer, Mirja has written about. She has contributed so many dog profiles to this blog in the past and I hope that continues. Thanks Mirja!

THE STORY OF A SENIOR DOG!

This is the story of so many senior dogs. Once upon a time he had a family. For 5 years he knew who they were and he knew who he was. He had a home and a bed of his own and he thought that he was important to them but he was wrong! On August 1, 2011 they turned their 12 yr. old dog in to the West Los Angeles Shelter. They said they were moving and they didn't want him anymore! He never will understand why he couldn't be included in those plans. He became yet another disposable senior dog!
Mac is a 12 yr. old neutered German Shepherd/Staffordshire terrier mix. His coat is brown brindle and he is quite thin as you can see in this very unflattering photograph of him. He weighs only 40 lbs. so he needs some good food and treats to help fatten him up.
Mac is a sweetheart of a dog. He is very friendly and he gets along real well with people and with other dogs. He is very playful and responsive and as a bonus he is even housebroken.
Mac, like any senior dog, yearns to be a part of a family. He dreams of spending the last days of his life in the comfort of a loving family and a soft bed. Sadly his age and his breed may not make those dreams come true but he keeps hoping and he will never give up. His tail keeps on wagging. Surely there is someone out there who will look at his sweet face and fall in love with him and then he will have a home again - this time forever! Please don't let the shelter be his last home - please!!
