Dog of the Week! Mandy, she's a fine girl...

Mandy A1090382, German Shepherd, 5 years old

Mandy is a lovely girl who really likes people. She takes instruction very well and responds to corrections easily. A typical Shepherd personality, she can be a little high strung. Mandy isn't great in stressful situations and generally just wants to be relaxing with her people. That said, she isn't really a couch potato or anything like that. She has energy and loves walks!

Mandy has a beautiful face and coat, so soft! I really enjoyed handling her as she connects very quickly with whomever has the leash. Her teeth are in very good shape so she could be younger than listed at the shelter.

My gut feeling about this dog is that she'd do well in a family situation or with a single. I think once she's in a home and her confidence improves, she'll be a lot calmer. The shelter has been very challenging for her as it is for most Shepherds.

Mandy already knows "sit" and "down" and has very good attention, even with distractions. She did well when approached by children and didn't have an issue with being petted by different people. Like I said, she's a people dog!

What she didn't like was when dogs got in her face without proper introductions. She also reacted when another dog jumped on her. However, she doesn't go after other dogs and wasn't "aggressive." We hung around with a few dogs in close proximity without a problem. I've only seen her in public at an adoption event and she basically did very well for a Shepherd.

Come meet Mandy and all the other amazing animals at the West LA Animal Shelter!

Where are you????

Why is it taking so long to find homes for some of our incredible dogs at the shelter. I have been extolling the virtues of dogs like Roger, who at a young 8 years old is the PERFECT dog for someone looking for a chill dog who is easy going, easy to walk, just easy! Plus he's so sweet.

Then we have Buddy. He is so cute. He's like a Lab/Pit mix who is really sweet. In fact he thinks he's a lap dog! He absolutely hates the shelter though so for him it's quite stressful. He would do well in a variety of situations. He could be a family dog or with a young couple. He's young and energetic and cute as a button!

Not to mention the other dogs who are waiting, waiting, waiting... Peyton, Daphne, Bandit, Hercules, etc...What's up with that??? Please see Black Jacks Bark on You Tube for the lastest and greatest doggie videos!

Well in the meantime, make a note of this event going on next weekend...

Feb. 13th: GR2 on Sawtelle Bvd near Olympic. For a groovy art show and adorable cats & dogs to adopt go to GR2 from 4pm to 8pm to adopt!

Bow wow ween was a bust!

Traffic on stage at Bow-wow-ween

This weekend we had the Bow Wow Ween event held in Topanga Canyon which, although a pretty place, in this weather it was boiling hot and dry as a bone... Very low attendance made this a very long day. After many hours of hanging around with our dogs, only one was taken by rescue. The rest went home. Very disappointing.

The positive thing about the day was seeing how great all our dogs were at this event and getting swell photos of them in costume. Our own Traffic represented the shelter in the costume contest. He was a natural! Such a good boy!

So many cute moments from both volunteers and dogs, have a look...

Volunteers having fun with the West LA dogs! Keri and Shadow show off!

Traffic was pooped after a long day of being cute!

Gigi acting very much the perfect princess that she is!

Batista can't take his eye off the ball even for a photo shoot!

Shadow was constantly mugging for the camera, what a ham!

Shadow was a lovely french maid!

Well, Shyla looked a little mortified to be wearing a dress, she's a tomboy at heart!

I think Kat's expression summed up the day, sorry to say.

All these gorgeous, well behaved dogs are available NOW at the West LA Shelter!
