Dexter found his forever home but...

MEDICAL DONATIONS NEEDED! PLEASE CROSS-POST

This sweet old guy was rescued from the streets by his angel Marina, and has been placed in a wonderful situation with another angel, Janet.

His name is now Dexter and he loves his new family (a sister dog --older lab, and 3 kitties) and they love him. Well, one cat is still on the fence (figuratively speaking -- they are all indoor cats :)

On his first day in his new home, Dexter went to the vet. The vet thought 13 yrs. old, but has upped that estimate to 15. He has bad arthritis, is underweight, and most urgently, has a serious heart murmur. He's had x-rays, bloodwork, and today he is getting a cardiac ultrasound in order to determine the severity of the heart murmur. This test alone is $750. By end of today Janet will have spent over $1,400.

We knew that this little fellow would have special needs and medical requirements, but these initial bills are staggering. If you can, PLEASE HELP DEXTER WITH HIS NEW START IN LIFE!!
Janet has stepped up for what will hopefully be several years of loving and caring for him; if many people chip in something, maybe we can cover a big chunk of this initial outlay!

The vet will not accept direct payment for these services, but can be contacted to verify services for Dexter. Janet will provide receipts for the care, if wanted.

Stop the madness of declawing cats!

CAT DECLAW BAN IS APPROVED BY CITY OF L.A. PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE -- NEXT STEP IS FULL CITY COUNCIL VOTE

We're very happy to report that the ban on declawing cats in the City of Los Angeles cleared its first hurdle today. The ordinance will now go before the full City Council for a vote.

Declawing isn't merely the removal of a cat's claws, as the term "declawing" implies, but is a series of extremely painful amputations that cause physical and psychological trauma. The last bone of each of the ten front toes of a cat's paw is removed, and tendons, nerves, and muscles that enable normal function and movement of the paw are severed. An analogy in human terms would be cutting off each finger at the last joint. As alternatives to declawing exist, there is no reason for anyone to declaw a cat.

Though some may argue that de-clawing keeps cats out of the shelters, the opposite is true. There is evidence that declawed cats are disproportionately abandoned at shelters, and that declawed cats may be euthanized more often because of the behavioral and physical problems that result from declawing. Cats may be more prone to bite and a cat whose paws hurt when scratching in a litter box may avoid the litter box altogether.

Declawing is illegal in many countries around the world, because it is regarded as inhumane.

Quite the variety of pooches at WLA!

Homer at Bow wow ween this weekend.

Very often I hear people say that the shelters are only full of Pit bulls and nothing else. A lot of times people also think they can only enjoy a certain breed and that no other dog will do. Both of these concepts are completely false.

Shelters ARE filled with Pit Bulls but many other breeds as well such as Jack Russells, Chows, GSDs, Beagles, Foxhounds, all kinds of Terriers, all kinds of Poodles, Lhasas, Chis, Poms, Huskies, etc. Lets no forget all the cool mixes who are unique and beautiful in their own right. Plus a mixed breed is often much more healthy in the long run than the purebred dog.

It is crazy to think that you have to buy a dog from a pet shop when there are all these beautiful dogs at our shelters looking for homes. Let's put puppy mills out of business by adopting dogs rather than buying them.

Here are some special dogs who are currently available for adoption!

This is a GORGEOUS dog! He is very friendly and wonderful to work with. He seems playful and attentive. He definitely has that typical hound personality. He sees with his nose! Probably okay with other dogs if properly introduced. Great dog for an active family, couple or single.

Homer A1065029 - Huskie

Homer is such a doll. He's way too old to have to be dealing with the shelter. He is very easy to handle on leash. He would love to have a soft bed to lay on to enjoy his golden years. We think Homer is about 8 or 9 years old. He would do best as the only dog or with a really mellow older dog. He loves food! Definitely a great match for an older adopter.

Gypsy A1059612 - Shepherd mix

Another older dog, Gypsy is a lovely lady with lots of love and energy to give the right person or family. She just loves people and is very responsive. I would guess that she would bond well with her new person. She's interested in other dogs but not sure yet if she's dog friendly. My guess is that if she could be properly introduced to a mellow dog, she'd be fine. I can see her in any number of situations with a family or an older couple looking for a lovely companion. She's great!

Bow wow ween was a bust!

This weekend we had the Bow Wow Ween event held in Topanga Canyon which, although a pretty place, in this weather it was boiling hot and dry as a bone... Very low attendance made this a very long day. After many hours of hanging around with our dogs, only one was taken by rescue. The rest went home. Very disappointing.

The positive thing about the day was seeing how great all our dogs were at this event and getting swell photos of them in costume. Our own Traffic represented the shelter in the costume contest. He was a natural! Such a good boy!
