"STARR" - BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL - A Happy Ending Tail!
I just had to post this one! My good friend and colleague Mirja who has been writing up most of the pleas for the dogs depicted on this site, wrote this one about Starr, a nice dog who was literally on death row at the shelter. Starr was a great dog that just wasn't attracting any attention so her hours were now numbered. Talk about drama! When networking shelter dogs, we sometimes don't know what will happen until the last possible moment...
Starr
The original plea
Starr is a beautiful 4 yr. old spayed
Korean Jindo who was found as a stray and who has called the West Los Angeles
Animal Shelter her home since July 1, 2011.
Time is running out for this sweet girl with the lush, soft gold and tan
coat.
For reasons that are hard to
understand she is largely ignored at the shelter. She sits at the front of her run looking
quietly at everyone who passes by. She
doesn't jump, she doesn't bark, she just sits and stares perhaps resigning
herself to the fact that no one will ever want her and yet Starr is a sweet dog
who deserves a home and the love of a special person.
Starr walks well on leash. She knows her commands and sits, goes down
and gives her paw without hesitation.
She has a gentle mouth and loves her treats. She would rather be close to her person than
chase a ball or run around but that could well be because shelter life has
taken the spirit out of her.
Please help this special dog find her
forever home before time runs out for her.
Please don't let her die at the shelter.
Addendum:
Whoever said miracles don't happen will change their mind when they read
the ending to this story. After working on this story today Oct. 13, 2011, I emailed K, my favorite A.C.T., at the
shelter to ask her if she knew how Starr was with other dogs. I was anxious to start networking her feeling
fairly certain that her time at the shelter was almost up. K emailed me back that a woman had come to
the shelter today and was interested in Starr but wanted to check with her
husband. How often do people say they
will come back and then never do?
K put a memo in the computer but then she learned that Starr was to be euthanized today! Thanks to K's notice, Starr was given until the end of the
day. If the people did not return today she
would be euthanized. But the stars aligned for Starr and they did
return. Starr was adopted!!! Thank you K for making this miracle
happen. Without her intervention Starr
would have been euthanized before the people could return. Oh my

Sandy the Staffie Seeks Suitable Situation! Seriously!

Sandy is a 3 yr. old spayed Staffordshire Terrier who has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since Oct. 9, 2011. Sandy and her 10 puppies originally came to the shelter on June 4, 2011.
Sandy or momma as we lovingly called her was a good mom who cared for her pups until it was time to separate from them. She cried and tried to reach them when they were put in a separate run. She had to be moved to a different part of the shelter where she could not see them. Her pups were all adopted very quickly and it was our wish that Sandy too would find a good home.
In Sept. the volunteers and staff were thrilled when a family came to the shelter to see her and decided to adopt her. It was our hope with Sandy, as it is with all of our dogs, that she find a good home with people who would love and care for her. Sadly for Sandy that did not happen. She was returned by the adoptive family because the landlord did not approve. They described Sandy as friendly with everyone and a good dog which we all knew from her previous time at the shelter.
Sandy loves to play with her toys but more than anything she loves her people. She is good with other dogs and she is just a fun dog to be around as can be seen in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?

Meet Stanley. He's been at the shelter since 8/13/11. He had a neglectful owner and was being held as "evidence". He has demodex mange and needs out NOW! Please network this boy. He's great with people and seems to be unreactive to dogs - even with a yappy chihuahua attacking the meet and greet fenced area he just walked up to the fence sniffed him and then turned away.
I think he looks like there is some Shar Pei in there too!

JAZ A1237432: Beautiful GSD at WLA in desperate need of a home
"Please help
me! I am going crazy in this
cage". If Jaz could talk those
would be the words coming out of her
mouth. Being caged and never
getting out to run or play is taking its toll on this beautiful one year old
spayed German Shepherd. She
literally tries to climb the walls of her cage in an effort to get out. It is a heartbreaking sight to see her
trying to crawl her way up and out.
Jaz was adopted once but was returned because she was reportedly
aggressive towards the owner's other dog however at the shelter she has been OK
with other dogs but under supervision.
She has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since August 21,
2011.
Jaz is described
as smart and a dog who knows her commands.
She is food motivated but has a soft mouth. She is described as a little shy but is
a good dog who is stunningly beautiful.
Shelter life is
hard on any dog but for many German Shepherds being caged for days and weeks on
end creates stress that can be seen in their behavior. Jaz needs a home like every shelter
dog. Please help her find her

Dear Friends and Rescuers,
Anza Animal Friends is a large-scale dog rescue that is very sadly having to close its doors suddenly due to a family emergency. Because of this we need safe, solvent and enriching placements for our beloved rescue dogs. All of these dogs were at one time either dumped by their former owner, found wandering the streets or were within hours of being killed in an Animal Shelter. Anza Animal Friends Dog Rescue gave these dogs a 2nd chance when there was none. Now that the rescue needs to close, these dogs desperately need responsible placement and time is of the essence. There were abandoned once….WE CANNOT LET THEM DOWN AGAIN.
We have reached out to the rescue community, as well as individuals, to help us find rescues that could take them in or private adopters to give them a home. Since August 26th we’ve found amazing homes for 9 dogs! The rescue community has been amazing with stepping in to help network these dogs and we have commitments for about 25-30 more and are still networking the remaining dogs in need.
At this time we are reaching out for much needed support. We are trying to raise $6000 minimum to meet the dogs’ needs. This will get us started but even after the 25-30 that are pending rescue/adoption we will still need funding to support the remaining dogs while we continue to network them into homes and/or other rescues.
Below is a basic breakdown of where the funds will be applied:
-Dog food– There haven’t been any food drops and we go through 4 large bags everyday.
-$300-500 for an on-site vet visit
-$150 Rabies vaccine vial
-$150 Heart-worm test kit
-$1000-2000 + for vetting (i.e. Rabies boosters, Heart Worm tests where required, Health Certificates, Spays and Neuters)
-$3000 in gas for the 2 transports thus far scheduled ($1000 for the Pacific Northwest transport and $1500-2000 for the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan transport)
-Vehicle rental and/or a paid animal rescue transporter (if you have access to a cargo van and/or bus that can hold large crates that you can lend please let us know and we can save $ on vehicle rental fees as this gets very expensive)
Creative thinking and ideas to save money are welcomed however time is of the essence.
In closing I invite you to please view the adoptable dogs in the albums (links provided at the bottom). Every dog in this album has it’s own story and often there is a lot of sadness behind the eyes of an abandoned dog. But these dogs now have hope where once there was none. They are all on different parts of their journey and it’s up to us to be their stewards and see them through to a rich and wonderful life….the life that all animals deserve.
