ROYAL (ANIMAL ID#A1262078)

On death row, scheduled to be killed on FEB 10. No more reprieves for this boy.

Royal, about 15 months old, is a neutered male fawn Staffordshire Bull Terrier. He ended up at the WLA Shelter on Nov. 2nd as a stray.  Shortly after, a stranger walked up to his kennel door and stuck his arm in so Royal growled and barked at him -- he didn't bite, but he certainly told the man he didn't appreciate his gesture (like people, dogs don't like everyone they meet).  Royal was taken to Isolation and that's where he has lived for almost his entire stay at the shelter.

Shelter staff take Royal out when they can and he got out to run and play with a female PB not too long ago and they had a great time!

He is STRONG, loves to play, corrects easily (from both human and dog), and sits on command. No reported aggression toward male or female staff at the shelter.

Why isn't this girl being scooped up? How sad that this lovely lady can't find someplace to rest her weary head. Don't you need a sweet senior to warm up your chilly winter nights??

My name is Candy and I am a spayed mixed terrier and about as cute as can be, if I do say so myself. A lady never likes to divulge her age but I will tell you one thing, I am probably not 13 yrs. old like they say I am. I have the spirit and energy of a pup!

The sad part of my story is that I was picked up as evidence in a humane investigation. My life has not been very happy but I still have a great attitude. I would love any family that decided to give an "old girl" like me a chance for a happy life.

When I was brought to the shelter on Oct. 22, 2011 I only weighed 13 lbs. and was very emaciated. The shelter fed me good food and now I weigh 20 lbs. I'm actually getting a little chunky which no girl likes to admit but I haven't had much exercise here at the shelter.

A couple of the volunteers recently gave me a bath and boy, did I ever love that. I kept kissing the person who was holding me because I was so happy.

I am also a happy girl when I get to go into the play yard to run and sniff around. I am housebroken so the yard is nice for that too.

Hey, I also know how to sit on command, plus I have a very soft mouth when I take treats.

It's true that older dogs like me have a hard time finding a home, but I hope people can see what a cool dog I am. I promise that I would be very loving and sweet. I would even sit in your lap and watch T.V. with you if that would make you happy. PLEASE ADOPT ME, you won't be sorry!

Derek, a scared but sweet boy who needs your help!

This story is written by a woman who wants to help Derek but needs a rescue to pull him out of the shelter and assist in finding a permanent home. Derek is a sweet but very scared dog that isn't doing well in the shelter. Please help!

 "My temporary name is Derek.  I am a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix, approximately 7 years old, and have been at the WLA Animal Shelter since September 18, 2011. 

For over 90 days I have been in the same kennel – across from the cat room -- hiding as far in the corner of the bedding cave as possible.  Around my 80thday of hiding in my kennel cave, a lady came to find her lost cat and stopped to see my picture on the front of my kennel.  Every few days she comes back to talk to me but I am too terrified to come out and meet her.  The noise in this shelter gives me anxiety and I am too scarred to find out what is going on around me.  Therefore, I just stay in my cave, hide from the noise, and stay invisible from all the people going by. 

 

So far it’s been working and aside from this lady no one ever sees me.  Near my kennel are two gates that slam all day long, which also frightens me.The woman who took an interest in me decided to bring some roast beef to see if she could get me to come out of my hiding place.  She throws the meat into my kennel, close to the bedding area, but I will only come out when she is not looking.  One of the shelter staff persons decided to help the lady get a look at me and came behind my kennel.  When I hear a staff person behind my kennel I know I have to get out.  When the lady saw me come out of the cave I tried to run back in and the gate hit me in nose.  I just curled up in the corner of the concrete run, closest to my cave, and trembled until she told the shelter man to open the gate and let me back into my hiding place.

One day, after many visits, another Shelter staff man decided to take me to the visiting area to meet the lady.  It was my first time out in the sunshine in over two months!  I was well behaved and did not pull on the rope leash or misbehave in any way.  The Shelter man noticed many good things about me and thought I would be a very nice dog who could live in an apartment with cats.  He made this assessment based on seeing me interact with a very small dog next to the visiting area.  I went up to smell he little dog and I did not display any aggression towards him.  I jumped up on the park bench and let everyone pet me.  I looked all around with interest through the fence to the parking area.  

Perhaps someone I know will come back to get me but I’m losing hope and am now very depressed, losing my desire to eat from constantly being scared.The next day the lady came again and they took me back to the visiting area.  Again, I was alert and well behaved but after a few minutes I had to go back to my hiding place.  The lady noticed that I have pressure sores on my elbows from laying on the concrete in my kennel, so she bought me a nice bed from Costco and makes sure that I still have my bed every time she comes to visit.The lady's husband is not sure that someone big like me should live in an apartment. 

I just wish someone would take me out of this shelter to some place quiet where I could heal emotionally.  I am so very scared at the shelter and too afraid to try and make friends.  I just want to be someplace warm and quiet with someone who will try and find out what a nice dog I am.Will someone please help me get out of here?"

Chanel has already been through so much! After surviving her ordeal, I can't even imagine that this wonderful girl could be near death's door once again!  Chanel has been at the WLA shelter a very long time and the clock is winding down for her. Please help Chanel find a home and finally be out of harm's way!

Another update on Queenie... Returned to the shelter.

I hate to have this news to share, but Queenie was returned after 1 day due to one of the dog's that lived in the home didn't like her and started a fight. No dogs were hurt.  So, back to the drawing board. Please don't forget her, she really needs the help!  Thanks everyone for all your help in networking this great dog!!!

This sweet girl really breaks my heart. She was left at the shelter after a divorce. Queenie had always lived in a home with a family and through no fault of her own, she found herself at the shelter. She's been there for a long time now and her chances get slimmer over time. Kane is SWEET as sugar!

Kane is a beautiful 5 yr. old brown and white,  neutered pit bull terrier.  He was surrendered to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on July 5, 2011 after his owner lost his home.  It wasn't Kane's behavior or anything about this wonderful boy that brought him to the animal shelter.  He just didn't have a home anymore. 

Kane is described by those who have worked with him as a "gentle giant."  He responds well to correction.  He walks extremely well on leash and shows no  aggression towards the other dogs when walking through the kennel.  He is a little shy at first but warms up quickly.  He knows sit and knows how to give his paw. He is not reactive towards other dogs but needs a little work on focusing.  He is housebroken.

Sandy the Staffie Seeks Suitable Situation! Seriously!

Sandy is a 3 yr. old spayed Staffordshire Terrier who has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since Oct. 9, 2011.  Sandy and her 10 puppies originally came to the shelter on June 4, 2011.

Sandy or momma as we lovingly called her was a good mom who cared for her pups until it was time to separate from them.  She cried and tried to reach them when they were put in a separate run.  She had to be moved to a different part of the shelter where she could not see them. Her pups were all adopted very quickly and it was our wish that Sandy too would find a good home. 

In Sept. the volunteers and staff were thrilled when a family came to the shelter to see her and decided to adopt her.  It was our hope with Sandy, as it is with all of our dogs,  that she find a good home with people who would love and care for her.  Sadly for Sandy that did not happen.  She was returned by the adoptive family because the landlord did not approve.  They described Sandy as friendly with everyone and a good dog which we all knew from her previous time at the shelter.

SUPERLATIVES ARE NOT ENOUGH!!!!!!! Luna A1159270 @ SLA shelter today

Luna (A1159270, 2 years, a sizable 60 pounds) is a miracle dog. This canine is categorically one of the best ever. Gentle, attentive, a great leash walker, an absolute people charmer who loves even the littlest baby, Luna was not ashamed in the least to be kissing another girl in the hallway. When her tongue came out and dusted Bessy's nose and mouth, then washed off every bit of dirt that might have been on or around her snout, everyone around had to giggle. Luna's so big and she's so gentle. Her fawn brindle coat is like velvet to the touch. A perfect therapy dog perhaps -- but definitely a fine example of how the most wonderful dogs wind up at the shelter. She needs to delight many more people -- as soon as possible. "Great Dog! Great Personality!" were the words used by one of the volunteer trainers in describing Fiona. Fiona is a young tan and white spayed pit bull terrier who was found running around with several other dogs near some stables. She has called the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter her home since June 13, 2010. She is thought to be about 1 1/2 yrs. old. Fiona is a high energy dog who loves to play in the yard. Chasing balls is one of the joys of her life. She does not show well in her shelter environment but once she gets out and experiences a little bit of freedom her true personality shines through. Her wish is to find a "forever" home and a yard of her very own where she could frolic and sniff to her heart's content. Fiona is stronger than she looks and needs leash training but she is a smart girl and would be an ideal candidate for training.

They tell me that my last day is Oct. 14, 2010. I don't understand why that has to be because my lady friends at the shelter both human and doggie think that I am sweet and handsome. Yes I do get along with the ladies! I love, love, love to play ball but you already know that. I'm smart so I know that I will soon learn to "leave it" when I'm told to do that but I do so love that ball. I have a lot of energy so I am the happiest when I can run but my volunteer friends compliment me on how nicely I walk. I'm only 1 1/2 yrs old and I need a chance to make someone happy. I've already been neutered so I'm ready to go to my "forever home" as soon as someone wonderful comes for me. Please help me go home!!!

South LA Shelter: Taffeta (A1111364, only a year old)

She's beautiful and she's friendly,
but she's out of time

Taffeta (A1111364, only a year old) is absolutely out of time now (been on alert since May 17th!!!!!). This is her last week (needs out by Friday, the 11th) in our over-crowded shelter. Don't let this social butterfly die. She showers affection on those lucky enough to meet her. Taffeta is certainly very enthusiastic and she can get slightly mouthy -- like the big puppy that she is -- but never aggressive -- and she does calm down quickly. She's been fine with other dogs. Graduation is coming up -- and those of us who have met her are waiting to see her walk on the stage and out the shelter door. Peanut played so nicely with my girl Sadie (also for adoption). He was very polite and patient with her as they played. Good job Peanut.

He's a big guy who is really playful and sweet. Gorgeous smile too! Now we know he's cool with other dogs, at least female dogs... He's very cool, don't let him run out of time....

Astaire is a dancer, a prancer and a really good kisser!

This just in from SLA!!!

How did it happen that I asked about Astaire last Saturday? I had admired his soft, fluffy coat many times. Seen his tail start to flutter from side to side when I approached his kennel. I never expected to hear that he was going to be euthanized that very day. I was stunned. Now, granted a brief extension, Astaire is waiting for someone special to save him -- and soon.

Astaire (A1099183, 2 years old) is affectionate, a great kisser, -- and a dashingly divine dancer. When he walks, he lifts his paws like a Clydesdale, like a show dog in the ring, so assured of capturing his First Place ribbon. (He's gotten a bit stiff in the legs -- so needs a regular work-out routine.) He's confident. He knows that he's got charm and good looks. Kenneled with other dogs, Astaire seems fine in that department as well. The Happy Ending Project: A video story... Dottie!

Sometimes pictures can tell a story better than words ever could. A while back at the WLA Shelter we had a beautiful Malinois puppy who was very confident and smart. As cute as she was, we wondered if we could find her a the right person. Often confidence and intelligence can be trouble in some dogs if the person who adopts the puppy doesn't know how to reign in that combo.

Fortunately for this little girl, she found the PERFECT home! She is now being trained in dog agility. Her mind is being exercised as well as her body. She not only gets exercise, but also socialization being around other dogs. What a great outcome. We hope to follow Dottie's progress as she becomes an agility champ!
