Fantastic Finegan! ID #A1282754 @ the WLA Shelter!

Finegan is a very special little dog!  He is an 8 yr. old black and white, neutered terrier mix who was found as a stray wandering the streets of West Los Angeles.  On Feb. 1, 2012 he was brought to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter.
Many dogs are found in circumstances like Finegan's, so what makes him so special?  To begin with he is about as cute as they come both before and after his bath as you can see in the photographs.  Finegan is a happy little guy who wags his tail a lot . He is also very calm and well mannered.  What then is it that makes Finegan so special?  Well, it turns out that Finegan is "toothless"!!.
Why is he toothless you ask?  We don't have an answer and Finegan can’t tell us.  The good news is that it doesn't seem to bother him.  He takes treats with the best of them and as long as his food is soft he will have no problems.  His weight appears to be normal for a dog his size.  What a story he would tell if only he could talk.
Adopting an 8 yr. old toothless terrier may not be at the top of your list when you come to the animal shelter but one look at Finegan and your heart will melt.  His sweetness and gentleness shine through and worrying about him biting someone will never be an issue. :-)
He is a precious little dog who needs someone to love him. Don't let the shelter be his last home!

Derek A1250979 @ WLA : his angel needs a little help...

Derek, a scared but sweet boy who needs your help!
This story is written by a woman who wants to help Derek but needs a rescue to pull him out of the shelter and assist in finding a permanent home. Derek is a sweet but very scared dog that isn't doing well in the shelter. Please help!
A1250979
"My temporary name is Derek.  I am a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix, approximately 7 years old, and have been at the WLA Animal Shelter since September 18, 2011.

For over 90 days I have been in the same kennel – across from the cat room -- hiding as far in the corner of the bedding cave as possible.  Around my 80thday of hiding in my kennel cave, a lady came to find her lost cat and stopped to see my picture on the front of my kennel.  Every few days she comes back to talk to me but I am too terrified to come out and meet her.  The noise in this shelter gives me anxiety and I am too scarred to find out what is going on around me.  Therefore, I just stay in my cave, hide from the noise, and stay invisible from all the people going by.

So far it’s been working and aside from this lady no one ever sees me.  Near my kennel are two gates that slam all day long, which also frightens me.The woman who took an interest in me decided to bring some roast beef to see if she could get me to come out of my hiding place.  She throws the meat into my kennel, close to the bedding area, but I will only come out when she is not looking.  One of the shelter staff persons decided to help the lady get a look at me and came behind my kennel.  When I hear a staff person behind my kennel I know I have to get out.  When the lady saw me come out of the cave I tried to run back in and the gate hit me in nose.  I just curled up in the corner of the concrete run, closest to my cave, and trembled until she told the shelter man to open the gate and let me back into my hiding place.

One day, after many visits, another Shelter staff man decided to take me to the visiting area to meet the lady.  It was my first time out in the sunshine in over two months!  I was well behaved and did not pull on the rope leash or misbehave in any way.  The Shelter man noticed many good things about me and thought I would be a very nice dog who could live in an apartment with cats.  He made this assessment based on seeing me interact with a very small dog next to the visiting area.  I went up to smell he little dog and I did not display any aggression towards him.  I jumped up on the park bench and let everyone pet me.  I looked all around with interest through the fence to the parking area.

Perhaps someone I know will come back to get me but I’m losing hope and am now very depressed, losing my desire to eat from constantly being scared. The next day the lady came again and they took me back to the visiting area.  Again, I was alert and well behaved but after a few minutes I had to go back to my hiding place.  The lady noticed that I have pressure sores on my elbows from laying on the concrete in my kennel, so she bought me a nice bed from Costco and makes sure that I still have my bed every time she comes to visit. The lady's husband is not sure that someone big like me should live in an apartment.

I just wish someone would take me out of this shelter to some place quiet where I could heal emotionally.  I am so very scared at the shelter and too afraid to try and make friends.  I just want to be someplace warm and quiet with someone who will try and find out what a nice dog I am.Will someone please help me get out of here?"

Queenie ID A1250868: Urgent for Queenie, will she make it home for the holidays?

Queenie ID# (A1250868)

I was just a puppy when I became part of a family.  That was 5 years ago and I was so happy and then my world came to a crashing end.  The people that I loved so much decided to get a divorce and I no longer fit into their plans so they brought me to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter.  This was back on Sept. 17, 2011.  I miss them and still look for them but they are not coming back.
I am a spayed Labrador retriever/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. The people who used to be my family described me as friendly with everyone including other dogs.  They said that I was "very nice and a smart dog".
The volunteers at the shelter are now my best friends.  They agree that I am a very nice dog. They take me into the yard where I love to play especially with the larger size balls.  I know how to sit, shake and lay down and because I love treats, there's isn't much that I can't learn.  I need to work on focusing more but when I get out into the yard I forget myself and just enjoy being free again.  I get along just fine with the other dogs so that is a real plus for me and hey guess what?  I am housebroken!
I need a home of my own and someone to love me again and let me show them what a good, loving dog I can be.  It wasn't my fault that I ended up at the shelter.  I would be such a great friend to some lucky person.  Please help me find a home!!

PLEASE HELP NETWORK THIS GREAT DOG WHOSE TIME IS RUNNING OUT. $500 PLEDGED SO FAR TO AN APPROVED RESCUE.

Kane ID# A1165629

Kane is SWEET as sugar!
Kane is a beautiful 5 yr. old brown and white,  neutered pit bull terrier.  He was surrendered to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on July 5, 2011 after his owner lost his home.  It wasn't Kane's behavior or anything about this wonderful boy that brought him to the animal shelter.  He just didn't have a home anymore.
Kane is described by those who have worked with him as a "gentle giant."  He responds well to correction.  He walks extremely well on leash and shows no  aggression towards the other dogs when walking through the kennel.  He is a little shy at first but warms up quickly.  He knows sit and knows how to give his paw. He is not reactive towards other dogs but needs a little work on focusing.  He is housebroken.
Kane is available for the adult foster program and it is his hope that he will find a home again either in the foster program or a forever home.  He is a wonderful, gentle dog. Please help Kane find his forever home.   CONTACT MIRJA AT MBISHOP355@AOL.COM.

Sandy the Staffie Seeks Suitable Situation! Seriously!

Sandy A#1219443

Sandy is a 3 yr. old spayed Staffordshire Terrier who has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since Oct. 9, 2011.  Sandy and her 10 puppies originally came to the shelter on June 4, 2011.
Sandy or momma as we lovingly called her was a good mom who cared for her pups until it was time to separate from them.  She cried and tried to reach them when they were put in a separate run.  She had to be moved to a different part of the shelter where she could not see them. Her pups were all adopted very quickly and it was our wish that Sandy too would find a good home.
In Sept. the volunteers and staff were thrilled when a family came to the shelter to see her and decided to adopt her.  It was our hope with Sandy, as it is with all of our dogs,  that she find a good home with people who would love and care for her.  Sadly for Sandy that did not happen.  She was returned by the adoptive family because the landlord did not approve.  They described Sandy as friendly with everyone and a good dog which we all knew from her previous time at the shelter.
Sandy loves to play with her toys but more than anything she loves her people. She is good with other dogs and she is just a fun dog to be around as can be seen in this video.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTM3zGss7Xc
Please help Sandy find her forever home. She is at the West Los Angeles Shelter now!!! -- mirja bishop

TARA - A1133736 Needs a loving home this time!

TARA - A1133736

I am a 2 1/2 yr. old unaltered female brown and white Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I was found as a stray on July 20, 2010 so the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter has been my home for much too long.

I have to be honest with you. I am a very high energy dog so I will need a very special person to be my forever friend. One of the volunteers at the shelter who really likes me fills a can with rocks and if I get too excited and pull too hard on my walks, she rattles the can and I shape up just like that. I really do want to please but I am a happy dog and sometimes I get a little too enthusiastic. If I have a chance to exercise and run around for awhile I become very easy to get along with and have actually been described as "well behaved". Can you imagine that?

I know that if I had a chance to be with someone who really loved me and who was willing to work with me and train me I could be the best dog in the world. I love to have my belly rubbed and my rear end scratched but then what dog doesn't like that. I am used to doing my own thing because I never really had anyone who cared about me and worked with me. I know that if that special person came into my life and loved me like I would love them we could do all kinds of amazing things together. I just need a chance to prove that.

2 GREAT dogs NEED a HOME TODAY: Romeo & Fiona at WLA

"Great Dog! Great Personality!" were the words used by one of the volunteer trainers in describing Fiona. Fiona is a young tan and white spayed pit bull terrier who was found running around with several other dogs near some stables. She has called the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter her home since June 13, 2010. She is thought to be about 1 1/2 yrs. old. Fiona is a high energy dog who loves to play in the yard. Chasing balls is one of the joys of her life. She does not show well in her shelter environment but once she gets out and experiences a little bit of freedom her true personality shines through. Her wish is to find a "forever" home and a yard of her very own where she could frolic and sniff to her heart's content. Fiona is stronger than she looks and needs leash training but she is a smart girl and would be an ideal candidate for training.

ROMEO - ID# A1118039

They tell me that my last day is Oct. 14, 2010. I don't understand why that has to be because my lady friends at the shelter both human and doggie think that I am sweet and handsome. Yes I do get along with the ladies! I love, love, love to play ball but you already know that. I'm smart so I know that I will soon learn to "leave it" when I'm told to do that but I do so love that ball. I have a lot of energy so I am the happiest when I can run but my volunteer friends compliment me on how nicely I walk. I'm only 1 1/2 yrs old and I need a chance to make someone happy. I've already been neutered so I'm ready to go to my "forever home" as soon as someone wonderful comes for me. Please help me go home!!!

Family Favs at West LA today! Wonderful dogs to adopt...

Baby A1134798, 3 years old
This dog is a real winner. She has a wonderful disposition and temperament. She grew up around kids and lived the family life. It's so sad to think of her at the shelter missing her family. Lucky for Baby, she has a guardian angel who is tracking her progress and making sure she is safe.

Baby is a mellow girl. Loves all people, adults and kids alike! She would be a great dog for anyone and any family. Come meet her today at the WLA shelter.

Priscilla A1127452, 6 years old
This lady is so sweet. Priscilla has been at the shelter for what seems like forever. However, this lady has such a great temperament that she hasn't lost her sparkle. Lots of the time Priscilla is sleeping in her kennel and relaxing. Bad thing about that is that no one gets to see what a great girl she is... wake up Pris!
She is great with people and even gets on well with other dogs. She loves going on walks and meeting new people along the way. She is very strong and does pull a bit on leash but once she is over the initial excitement she's fine. Overall, she is a terrific dog and would be happy in many situations.
Come meet her and if she's sleeping, wake her up!

Oswald A1019941 at WLA needs a break!

OSWALD A1019941, 5 years old, Shih-poo, small

Crazy cute and a little crazy! Look at this little guy, he’s quite a little piece of work! He’s gained a reputation for being a little mischievous, not always respecting his kennel mates. Oswald is fine with other dogs his size and even likes to play with them. He needs more time to become more socialized and learn how to interact more successfully with other dogs. However, he’s also a fine only child for the one dog household. An adult home would be best for him.

Ossie is super adorable, he looks like a Star Wars character! He loves to go on walks and frolic around the yard. He loves his people and likes to just relax with them given a chance. He hasn’t had a lot of chances to do that lately and this poor little kid has had a rough time dealing with the stress of the shelter. He needs a home…fast!

Oswald doesn’t shed, but will need grooming.

If you are interested in adopting a dog who needs some love and understanding, this is your boy. He does form strong bonds with his people and with some training this guy is bound to be a terrific companion!

The dog days of August.= DOGS IN DANGER!!!

You may not have heard that this time of year is very difficult for shelter animals, especially dogs. It seems like more dogs come in and fewer get out. Everyone is on vacation, out of town and fewer dogs seemed to be rescued.

Over at WLA there are several dogs who are OUT OF TIME and will be killed in the coming weeks.
Right now, 3 dogs have a death date of August 29th. Jazz, Donny and Tyler... These poor guys through no fault of their own are going to be victims of the system, if they don't get out this week.

Thanks to Mirja Bishop for the descriptions below...

DONNY - ID#A1110189

Donny is a 3 yr. old unaltered male, black and white American Staffordshire Terrier. He was picked up as a stray and has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since April 26, 2010. Donny is described as a sweet boy who does well on his walks. He can be "all over the place" until he settles down. He likes to play ball and will exchange the ball for a treat. He is good on leash but has shown some signs of leash aggression. Donny does not like kittens or cats. He has played in the yard with a female dog and been quite friendly but not so with male dogs.

TYLER - ID#A1104733

Tyler is a 6 yr .old unaltered male, black and white Labrador Retriever mix. He was picked up as a stray and has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since April 3, 2010. Tyler is described as being very intelligent. He corrects very easily when needed. He is easy to walk and shows his gratitude by wagging his tail the entire time. He is very friendly and loves to get treats. He did well when meeting another dog through the fence and is described as being good with other dogs unless they are aggressive towards him. He has shown some food aggression. He needs time and attention and then will connect with his handler. He is described as being a "sweet" dog.

JAZZ - ID#A1106409

Jazz is a 4 yr. old neutered male, brown and white American Staffordshire Terrier. He was picked up as a stray and has been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since April 10, 2010. He is described as a sweet boy who is a little timid. He knows "sit" and loves treats. He warms up quickly and enjoys being petted and brushed. He especially likes to have his tummy rubbed. He is described as being "all over the place" when first taken out of his run but is good with recall. He walks well on leash. He enjoys playing catch. He did exhibit a negative reaction to one of the other male dogs.

Please DONATE, NETWORK, RESCUE & SHARE this info far and wide.

Dog of the WEEK: Clara A1117624, what a face!

Clara, Pit Bull, Female, Young, Large

Clara is a Gorgeous Pittie girl. Very sweet and gentle, but your typical Pitt Bull Terrier who loves people and does everything full throttle! She is STRONG, but very much a people pleaser. She also loves to play fetch and knows some basic commands. She is just an all around amazing dog!

The other great thing about Clara is that she really likes other dogs and seems to be good at getting along with dogs of different sizes and ages as well. She'd probably love to have a playmate who could keep up with her, however, that isn't necessary since she would get on with with most any dog. Recently, she was introduced to one of our older female dogs and she definitely picked up on that the older gal was up to rowdy play so she toned it down a bit and they did great!

Clara is a great dog with a terrific temperament who really needs a loving home where she would be part of the family. She would NOT be happy as a "backyard dog" without social interaction, but what dog would? Plus with her beautiful white coat she shouldn't be out in the sun all the time...

Please come meet with gentle giant and see what I mean! She's at the West LA Animal Shelter right now!

Dog of the WEEK: Little Rocky Rockstar! WLA A1106811, Come on!

Rocky Rockstar, 3 years old, 15 lbs, Neutered

Okay, this little guy has been waiting and waiting for a home. It's just not right! He's a wonderful little fellow.

First off, he's a great size, just right for anyone. Second, he is a good boy, easy to handle and very food motivated so easy to train!

He like pretty much everyone...now... When he first arrived on the scene he was a little scared of everyone. However, with a little love and understanding he got over it. He's really blossomed since being at the shelter. It's weird, but some dogs do!

Best of all, he's fine with other dogs and would be wonderful with an older person since he's a pretty chill little guy himself.

Please don't let Rocky down! He needs a home and someone to look after him right now...

You can meet him at the West LA Shelter today!!

The Happy Ending Project: Chelsea Handler's dog Chunk shares his feelings about Pet Adoption!

Do you ever wonder what it sometimes takes to ensure a happy ending for dogs that are not quickly adopted by the public? Do you ever wonder what a dog might say that has finally been given that second chance?

Some answers to both questions by special guest
contributor, Chunk Handler.

===========================
Just to be clear. I’m a dog. I’m not a hero. I’ve never gone out of my way to rescue a kitten from a burning building. I’ve never alerted someone that little Timmy was stuck at the bottom of a well. What kind of little jerk plays next to a well anyway? I’m just your average dog. I eat, I sleep, and I take giant shadoobies. And sometimes I lay those dumps next to my Mom…while she’s exercising in Pilates class. I’m just regular old Chunk Handler. Bearing this in mind, you can imagine my surprise when I opened my email one day to find this letter.

Dear Chunk,
Well, Mr. gift-that-keeps-on-giving, this time you’ve outdone yourself. You’ve actually helped save a dog’s life! And I’d like you to write a Happy Ending story about it.
Good work, Chunk.
Marda

What’s a “Happy Ending” story? I have my suspicions about Happy Endings, but I doubt that’s what Marda’s talking about. LOL. I once knew this guy who would just say “LOL” instead of actually laughing. It’s like, get a life guy.

So far, my own life has had a pretty happy ending. I was saved from an Animal Shelter a day before my execution. A very generous person named Chelsea Handler adopted me. If you don’t know who Chelsea is, I don’t have time to explain it to you. It’s called Google. If you don’t know what Google is, then I really can’t help you.

Apparently there was a lot of hard work that led to my adoption. I was trained by a Drill Sergeant, stripped of all my bad habits, and house-broken for a life outside the shelter. None of it stuck by the way, I’m back to all my old ways, bitches. The Drill Sergeant worked tirelessly to get my story out to the people. She sent emails, made calls, and wrote all about my story, pleading for someone to take a chance on me. My story got popular, Chelsea adopted me, and then my story got even more popular. Grassroots really works, girl.

The better news is that through all the networking and contacts built off my success, the nice people at the shelter were able to save another dog’s life. Some bitch named Candy. She’s a one-year old Pit Bull, and she didn’t attract just one family to adopt her. She got FOUR. That’s unheard of, especially for a Pit Bull. Shortly after that, they were able to adopt out a 13-year old, nearly deaf, arthritic dog! Talk about a tough sell.

I think this is all great. But I just don’t see what any of it has to do with me. What did I ever do? I re-read the email from Marda, and sure enough she said right there that I had “outdone myself.” What the hell does that mean? I didn’t do anything. Chelsea’s a hero. The Drill Sergeant is a hero. The people who adopted those dogs are heroes. They’re all the ones who actually DID something. I sit around Twittering random thoughts like “Help! My Mom left me in the car.” http://twitter.com/chunkhandler

After sleeping on it, and then sleeping on it for a couple more weeks because I was really tired, I had a great idea. Maybe I didn’t do anything to save those dogs’ lives, but I can do something to help save others. Just by writing about my story, I’m helping raise awareness about all the great dogs out there that really need homes. The more people who know about this cause, the more dogs will be rescued from shelters. Go adopt a dog and love it forever, okay? I fired up my blackberry and quickly wrote back to Marda. It started like this…

Dear Marda,
Let me be clear. I’m a dog. I’m not a hero. But maybe I could be….

Many thanks to Chelsea Handler for Chunk’s appearance here.
"You can catch her—and sometimes Chunk—on her popular late night E! channel show, Chelsea Lately."

Reggie A1127873 at SLA: A total charmer! URGENT!!!

Reggie (A1127873, 2 year old, rottie mix, needs out by Monday, July 19th!!!!!) trembled at first, his haunches quaked, he froze on the leash. We coaxed him, knelt down and gave him reassurance. You can see the radiant smile that appeared soon afterward. I've watched Reggie for a while now. This 50-pound guy was put into a kennel with lots of little dogs, yapping and squirming. He looked around him, puzzled, but gentle as a lamb, he never overpowered them. Then Reggie was moved to a kennel with two big dogs, including a 14-year old. He was intimidated but polite, watching the big guys for tips on how to exist in a shelter. Reggie can adapt to any situation -- he's bright, he's considerate and he's super sweet. And he will fit in perfectly at any dog party. If you can save his sweet soul, please contact the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119. And kindly let us know that he will be helping at your next celebration. With thanks, Andrea & Mindy ivegonetothedogs@gmail.com (323) 363-4909

MIRACLE SURVIVED ONCE -- CAN SHE DO IT AGAIN? SLA URGENT!

Miracle (A1127808, 1 1/2 years old, on alert -- needs out by end of day, Tuesday, July 13th !!! ) arrived at the shelter weighing only 31 pounds with a nasty case of demodex to boot. So fearful, half-dead -- it was a miracle that she survived. Longing to trust people again it took only a few minutes to see this smile brighten her face. And it hasn't left since that time. Miracle is energetic and happy. She has been kenneled alone in ISO, getting extra food and treatment for her skin. She seems fine around other dogs and is super friendly with people. Please look at this face, open you heart, and call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119 to save her.

Kindly let us know as we are very concerned. Many thanks, Andrea & MIndy ivegonetothedogs@gmail.com (323) 363-4909

Reggie, he's trying to tell us something!!! HELP!

***VERY URGENT***
REGGIE - A1104261
WEST L.A. SHELTER

Reggie is a terrific guy, if we could only find him the right home! He's a little older but has plenty of love and energy to give. I think he would be such a different dog in a home environment. At the shelter he's a bit amped up from all the chaos and lack of freedom. Once out of the kennel, he settles down and is good on leash. All those who work with him really like him.

He does have some insecurity around other dogs which causes barking. He may be fine once he meets a dog, but we haven't really introduced him to another dog. He seems a little too agitated. One must remember that due to the stressful environment at the shelter some dogs don't do well and are very affected by the stress while others seem just fine. Reggie is stressed out so it is very difficult to assess his temperament with other dogs. He's great with people so that is not an issue.

I hope someone who likes shepherds and the distinguished older gents comes to meet him soon. I'm afraid that good ol' Reggie is running out of time!

Cookie is hungry for love A1113325 at WLA!

Cookie is so yummy! He's a lapdog of love! He likes to have fun, but best of all he loves a lap to sit on and a face to lick. Cookie is just a bundle of love. He's good with other small dogs and my guess is he'd be fine around cats as he's not very prey driven (a good thing). He doesn't seem to have any issues that I can tell. He's a great small size but not tiny. He's also not overly vocal or rambunctious.

Cookie escaped notice when he first got to WLA because he was pretty scared. He hid in his cubby whenever someone tried to interact with him. Now, he's hanging with his peeps and being all Mr. Friendly to everyone and anyone who will listen... He's actually an excellent dog that I can recommend to almost anyone. He'd be very easy since he's really tuned in to people. Cookie is an excellent dog and I'm shocked that he hasn't been scooped up yet!

Please come meet him soon! He's been at the shelter way too long already, for no good reason! Someone is missing out on a fantastic companion. Hurry up already!!!!
