Beautiful Simone A1138137: a great girl OUT of time at West LA

In shelters across the country black dogs have a difficult time finding forever homes. "Black dog syndrome" where people attach superstitious beliefs onto dogs like Simone results in these dogs frequently being the first ones to be euthanized. Simone is a great BLACK dog who deserves a good life. She is a 6 yr. old spayed American Staffordshire bull terrier who was found as a stray on August 1, 2010 and now calls the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter her home.

The volunteers who have worked with Simone have nothing but good things to say about her. She is described as being very attentive. She responds well to voice commands. She likes her treats and knows "sit and come". She walks well on leash and loves to play fetch. She is the happiest in the play yard where she can run and be free for a few brief moments. She has met both large and small dogs and has been fine with them. She was recently shown to two different families with children and did very well with both an 8 yr. old and a 10 yr. old child.

A "very great dog" was the comment made by one of the volunteers. Simone would fit into just about any kind of family situation. She is a sweet, friendly, loving dog who happens to be black. Finding a "forever home" before her time at the shelter runs out is her fervent wish and one that everyone who knows Simone hopes comes true.

URGENT - Lady - Young GS at SLA

She has a glimmer of hope -- a wonderful rescue that might take her if we can raise donations quickly. However, they are taking Shalimar, another South L.A. lady that we've been working on, and two big dogs is a lot to ask. So, if someone else can step up for this big puppy, it would be amazing. SCANDAL IN THE SHELTER. WHO WAS LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER?
We'll never know -- but we do know that Lady's honor was compromised before she arrived. However, that's in her secret past and now she faces an even greater embarrassment. Word has spread that our lovely, luscious Lady is the longest resident at South L.A. and, thus, in grave danger. What a horror!!!! Such a wonderful girl. So young. So gifted. So delectable. And such a good kisser (oops, that's where she went wrong the first time). Lady (A1190519, 43 pounds) is a happy, playful pup -- watch her video and see.

Lady has been kenneled with several different dogs, been to a mobile adoption, and won the hearts of many. But, she's waiting for you to take her home and save her reputation. A1145097 - Tulip, 8 year old, spayed, Boxer / Staffy Mix. VERY SAD

TULIP'S FOSTER FELL THROUGH!!!! WE WERE INFORMED LATE LAST NIGHT THAT TULIP'S FOSTER WAS IN A BAD CAR ACCIDENT AND SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FOSTER TULIP.

This poor dog was ALMOST OUT OF THE SHELTER but when we went to pull her they found a micro chip! So Tulip was put on hold while they tried to contact her former owner's. But the numbers were disconnected, mail returned and no one that we can find missing Tulip....now that she is available to be pulled her foster falls through!!! On top of it, WLA has a temporary moratorium volunteers walking dogs over 20 lbs so while already stressed, you can imagine what she's going through now. The new hope coordinator at WLA Stated:

SHE IS EXTREMELY STRESSED, LICKING THE BARS OF HER CAGE ALL DAY EVERYDAY. TULIP IS A VERY SWEET AND HAPPY DOG....THEY'VE LISTED HER AS 8 BUT SHE TRULY SEEMS 4-5 AT MOST. SHE HAS A LOT OF LIFE IN HER BUT NO PLACE TO LIVE IT. PLEASE PLEASE CROSSPOST AND NETWORK THIS SWEETHEART!!!

THE ONLY REASON TULIP IS STILL ALIVE AT WLA IS BEAUSE THE SHELTER WAS GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO WAIT WHILE WE ORGANIZED LOGISTICS....BUT NOW WE ARE BACK TO SQUARE ON! TULIP IS IN DESPERATE NEED OF A RESCUE OR PRIVATE ADOPTER!!!!

Olive

Who wouldn't want this wonderful dog? Once at the WLA shelter and now with Angel City Pit Bull rescue, Olive (formerly Sweetie) is available for adoption. She is a wonderful little girl!

Little Olive has had a tough run up til now. After being rescued from a chemical fire at a meth lab (while pregnant!) and parting ways with her puppies post delivery (sadly not all of them made it, but the ones who did were adopted!)-- Olive spent 5 months at the shelter. But she was kept alive so long because everyone who met her at the shelter fell completely in love with her. She's that sweet. And, of course, because she's the EASIEST dog in town. Olive is so laid-back, she'd be perfect for anyone. At a sprawling estate or with a single apartment dweller, she's so low-maintenance, you might forget she's even there...until she arrives to shower you with kisses and love. Great with all people and all dogs, even overzealous puppies! Gets along great with everyone at her day care.

K.C. (Kirby Cuddles, A1197385, 1 year old, all of 8 pounds) is a medical staff favorite. He has charmed them with his extra-cheery personality -- in the face of innumerable broken bones. Maybe the x-ray machine was playing tricks on them -- but it seems that this little fellow has old fractures throughout his small frame -- femur, tibia, ilium, pubis, sacro-iliac and don't forget, acetabular. And yet he gets around like a speed demon, never complaining. Will he need surgery? Most likely. He's only a year old and has a very busy schedule ahead, romping and running. He'll have to be in tip-top shape for those activities. Oh, and we can't forget to mention his unusual brindle coat!!! It was thought he was just dirty until shaved down and the markings appeared! Let's save this sweetheart who was ignored and mistreated by some loser owner who must have known K.C. had been hurt. We can raise donations for a qualified rescue to get K.C. to an orthopedic vet. Stella at SLA.wmv

When Stella (A1195004, 6 years old, a mere 9 pounds -- and she could lose some weight!) arrived at the shelter, so little and so defenseless in a world that was completely overwhelming to her, she was beyond terrified. What could she do but put up a ferocious front -- show her teeth and snarl at anyone who approached her. But, with kindness and a gentle hand, Stella stopped snarling -- and just shook instead. And soon, with walks around the block -- being held, she won't walk on a leash yet -- she came to trust us. It's hard to describe that first tail wag, that first kiss she gave. It was so unexpected and so overpoweringly wonderful in its innocence. Watching her video you understand that Stella was someone's lap dog. Her nails have never been clipped and she has no idea what a string around her neck means. This girl needs a secure environment -- NOT a boarding kennel -- and she promises you total devotion in return. Stella enjoys the company of other little doggies. In fact, it was by watching them that she decided she could go exploring. This girl needs out of the shelter now!!! Please call (213) 485-0117 or -0119. Lux-A1165613 -Desperately needs a RESCUE! Please help!

She is NOT a biter... So far no one has come forward for this unlucky little girl
Here is exactly what happened. Lux was always happy and well behaved on her walks. One day, because she was pulling on the leash, the volunteer did the training technique of quickly turning her around (360 degree) in the opposite direction.

There was a jogger ridiculously too close and practically on top of them and BEHIND them, when they turned the jogger was running directly at Lux and right on top of her! Lux was startled and she SNAPPED at the jogger, did not bite her. They stopped and Lux sat quietly and patiently while the jogger examined herself. The jogger's clothes were a very thin material and there was a SCRATCH...no broken skin. Everything was fine and the jogger continued jogging BUT now Lux has a "bite record"

She has never bitten before or since. The volunteers love her but the staff I hear is not that crazy about her, because when she first came in she hid and cringed in the back of the cage (she still does). Then she developed the LEARNED behavior from the other dogs in the kennel of running up to the front of the cage and barking at them.

With the volunteers that she knows she runs up and wags her tail happily and hopes it's time for a walk...BUT Lux will NEVER go for another walk and she will not get out alive, because now she has a "bite" history, unless a Rescue takes her...all because of the stupidity of the jogger, which Lux will have to pay for with her young life.

LOOK AT THAT HAPPY SWEET FACE. Of course she needs socialization, but the volunteer told us that she is just fine once she is outside of the Shelter...a place that she may never live to see.
