Derek A1250979 @ WLA : his angel needs a little help...

Derek, a scared but sweet boy who needs your help!
This story is written by a woman who wants to help Derek but needs a rescue to pull him out of the shelter and assist in finding a permanent home. Derek is a sweet but very scared dog that isn't doing well in the shelter. Please help!
A1250979
"My temporary name is Derek.  I am a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix, approximately 7 years old, and have been at the WLA Animal Shelter since September 18, 2011.

For over 90 days I have been in the same kennel – across from the cat room -- hiding as far in the corner of the bedding cave as possible.  Around my 80thday of hiding in my kennel cave, a lady came to find her lost cat and stopped to see my picture on the front of my kennel.  Every few days she comes back to talk to me but I am too terrified to come out and meet her.  The noise in this shelter gives me anxiety and I am too scarred to find out what is going on around me.  Therefore, I just stay in my cave, hide from the noise, and stay invisible from all the people going by.

So far it’s been working and aside from this lady no one ever sees me.  Near my kennel are two gates that slam all day long, which also frightens me.The woman who took an interest in me decided to bring some roast beef to see if she could get me to come out of my hiding place.  She throws the meat into my kennel, close to the bedding area, but I will only come out when she is not looking.  One of the shelter staff persons decided to help the lady get a look at me and came behind my kennel.  When I hear a staff person behind my kennel I know I have to get out.  When the lady saw me come out of the cave I tried to run back in and the gate hit me in nose.  I just curled up in the corner of the concrete run, closest to my cave, and trembled until she told the shelter man to open the gate and let me back into my hiding place.

One day, after many visits, another Shelter staff man decided to take me to the visiting area to meet the lady.  It was my first time out in the sunshine in over two months!  I was well behaved and did not pull on the rope leash or misbehave in any way.  The Shelter man noticed many good things about me and thought I would be a very nice dog who could live in an apartment with cats.  He made this assessment based on seeing me interact with a very small dog next to the visiting area.  I went up to smell he little dog and I did not display any aggression towards him.  I jumped up on the park bench and let everyone pet me.  I looked all around with interest through the fence to the parking area.

Perhaps someone I know will come back to get me but I’m losing hope and am now very depressed, losing my desire to eat from constantly being scared. The next day the lady came again and they took me back to the visiting area.  Again, I was alert and well behaved but after a few minutes I had to go back to my hiding place.  The lady noticed that I have pressure sores on my elbows from laying on the concrete in my kennel, so she bought me a nice bed from Costco and makes sure that I still have my bed every time she comes to visit. The lady's husband is not sure that someone big like me should live in an apartment.

I just wish someone would take me out of this shelter to some place quiet where I could heal emotionally.  I am so very scared at the shelter and too afraid to try and make friends.  I just want to be someplace warm and quiet with someone who will try and find out what a nice dog I am.Will someone please help me get out of here?"

Coco, the Sassy Rottie A0721226: Meet her at Best Friends This weekend!!!

I'm koo koo for Coco! ID #A0721226
(story by Mirja Bishop)

I love life!! I am a happy female Rottweiler around 5 yrs. of age who is drop dead gorgeous to look at if I do say so myself. I have been at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter since July 13, 2010 which is much too long for a cutie like me. I wag my beautiful tail all the time so that people will notice me and see how precious I am.

I have a favorite person at the shelter who spends a lot of time with me. She really loves me and has taught me so much. She introduced me to some other dogs both male and female, big and small and Hey I did just fine thank you very much!!! I even got to go into the cat room and the first time I wasn't too sure about them so I barked but my person told me "No" and I listened to her. The next time I just ignored them. They're only cats after all!!!

I never really learned how to play which makes me sad but I know that I can learn. My lady friend hops around and makes funny noises which I think is so cute. She is so happy when I jump around a little. I know that someday I will have a yard and a special person and then I will play with the best of them. I do have good manners and know sit, lay down and I will even shakes paws with you. I am also housebroken which is something that I am very proud of.

Please don't get all kissy with me right away. Let me sort of check you our first because I need to learn how to trust again and I know that I will if given a chance.

I want my own mommy and daddy so very much. I want a soft, warm bed and a loving pat on the back. I want a special person to love me and give me a "forever home". Please get me out of the cage that I live in now. I am so afraid that one day soon may be my last day. I don't want to die! I want a "forever home". Please help me! Please! I will give you my paw if you do and I will love you forever!!

Come meet Coco at Best Friends Super Adoption event at La Brea Tar Pits on Sunday, Nov.7th!

Reggie A1127873 at SLA: A total charmer! URGENT!!!

Reggie (A1127873, 2 year old, rottie mix, needs out by Monday, July 19th!!!!!) trembled at first, his haunches quaked, he froze on the leash. We coaxed him, knelt down and gave him reassurance. You can see the radiant smile that appeared soon afterward. I've watched Reggie for a while now. This 50-pound guy was put into a kennel with lots of little dogs, yapping and squirming. He looked around him, puzzled, but gentle as a lamb, he never overpowered them. Then Reggie was moved to a kennel with two big dogs, including a 14-year old. He was intimidated but polite, watching the big guys for tips on how to exist in a shelter. Reggie can adapt to any situation -- he's bright, he's considerate and he's super sweet. And he will fit in perfectly at any dog party. If you can save his sweet soul, please contact the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119. And kindly let us know that he will be helping at your next celebration. With thanks, Andrea & Mindy ivegonetothedogs@gmail.com (323) 363-4909

8 month old Rottie to be PTS at SLA. A tragedy...

HEISMAN'S A TROPHY WINNER. HE'LL PLAY ANY POSITION ON YOUR TEAM.
HANDSOME ENOUGH TO BE QUARTERBACK.

STRONG ENOUGH TO BE LINEBACKER.

QUICK ENOUGH TO BE RUNNING BACK. (Here tackled on the 2 yard line, toy in mouth, goal to go.)

And smart enough to be the referee. Just watch this instant replay : http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=ThatOtherMindyFromCamp&target=ALBUM&id=5401603191959207617&authkey=Gv1sRgCOOe5ruj5IzFdg&invite=CPnZ-NMP&feat=email

Heisman (A1072147, 8 month old rottie puppy, with his full and bushy tail!!!, red-listed on 11/7 -- so out of time this weekend) is an athletic star. He's powerful and does need some training. Was kenneled with another big, submissive dog.

Adopt him and you'll have a champion in your home. Call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119. And please let me know that he has joined your team.

The Shelter Chronicles: Too many desperate faces...

Starr, A1011930, Female, 4 years old,
chihuahua

This is a great little girl and sweet as can be. She
is one of those dogs that I tend to fall in love with
after an afternoon of hanging out at an adoption
event. This kid has been to several events but still
hasn't found her forever home. This little sweetie
is your typical feisty chihuahua lady who loves
who she loves and dogs are only okay... Big dogs
are iffy, but she's tolerant up to a point. Dogs
like Starr often get a bad rap as a snarky, snappy
chi, but truthfully, the volunteers who spend time
with her LOVE HER! She's got personality but is also
a lover-girl who wants a lap. I would recommend Starr
for an older person or any adult who has some patience
to spend the time and give her the guidance and love
she needs! She's waiting!!!!

Two beautiful Rottie's anyone??

Un-named, A1030436, Female, Rottweiler, 1.5 years

Dangy, A089805, Female, Rottweiler mix, 2 years

These GORGEOUS dogs caught my eye at the shelter this weekend. The un-named girl is full Rottie and a good size but not huge. She is a doll! Very friendly and non-reactive. This is a dog who would be easy to train as she is food motivated and has a lovely disposition. She seemed unfazed by the group of people who were surrounding her and the strange man asking her to sit. One thing is that my impression of "un-named Rottie" was that she has little or no obedience training. It would be a very helpful thing for her since she would need a strong leader. Anyone interested in a fabulous dog like this should be committed to training, no ifs, ands or buts. I would be SO angry if someone ruins this terrific dog by being a lazy jerk!

Dangy is such a good girl. She know tons of tricks and is happy to perform them for a mere treat. I guess her former guardians decided they didn't have time for her anymore. Sad as she is a darling dog and deserves better. She's a mix so she doesn't have the Rottie size. She's actually a medium sized dog who would be fine in any number of situations. In fact, I believe she is house trained already! Again, even though Dangy knows some tricks, I think she would benefit from some basic training where she could learn better leash manners (she pulls) and to tone down her excitement around kids and company. These are all trainable issues and since she's so sweet to begin with that I think she'd be a quick study. Also, she gets along with other dogs and small animals but not sure about cats. I'd love to see her with some active people or a family with older kids.

Picachu, A1014129, Female, adult, medium

Adonis, A1014130, Male, adult, medium

These two shy cuties hide out in their cubby most of the time. When you do get them out and they start to relax, wow, are they the sweetest two kids ever! Picachu and Adonis are attached at the hip, so to speak, as one follows the other and visa versa. Adonis is probably the more confident of the two, but he doesn't go far away from Picachu. They are soft dogs though and just want to trust someone. They are definitely mutts, probably with some Chow in there. I think they are so cute and expressive. My impression is that they were outside dogs :( as they don't really get the whole leash concept. However, lots of attention from shelter volunteers has helped them get used to such things. Of course, they are still shy and don't like all the noise and confusion of shelter life. They would be great dogs for an older couple as all these two really want is love and attention. Please come visit them and have them taken out of the kennel so you can really see how adorable and nice they really are!
