Dog of the Week! Pauly, surely! plus a few others...

Pauly - A1100154

First off, we have Pauly. This little dude has been at the shelter since March which is pretty long for someone of this small stature and cuteness. I don't get it! He's really a good kid, once you get to know him. He's only about 3 years old or so. He has very striking features like his funny turned out feet (a la Dachshund) and amazing mask like markings. I really like him, he has spunk!

I guess one of the issues that Pauly has struggled with is his jealousy of other dogs when he's around people. He gets along with other dogs, don't get me wrong. He just tends to be a little protective about his personal interests when on the lap of a loved one. It doesn't take much to become a loved one of Pauly, he really likes people!

He's a great dog and very manageable. I think he might do better with someone who has some experience since he can be a tad bossy!


I hate when I have a bunch of dogs to post who have been at the shelter for MONTHS! Okay, at least they are still alive and we've been able to work with them a lot. Some of them have blossomed and have become shelter "favorites." Others, well, not so much... Mainly because they are so stressed out that they are not really thriving in this very stressful environment. Not every dog can handle that.

Tiger - A1079663

There are several exceptional Pit Bulls who have managed to not find homes yet. I've posted Tiger several times now and he's been on FB and on YouTube. He's a wonderful dog, very chill. He is a Shar Pei Pit mix. Tiger is one of the dogs who has really blossomed over the months thanks to his teacher, Deb Fan. He shows very well so we don't really know what's keeping someone from adopting him. I could be that he's so, well, polite.

For some reason most people seem to be turned off by dog's with understated behavior. I suppose that they don't feel that there is an instant connection. Personally, I like the quiet dogs that express their love more subtly. Anyway, Tiger is still at the shelter and he's been there is December! I guess it's lucky for him that he keeps a low profile.

Peanut - A1088572

Then we have a very sweet boy, Peanut, who has been at the shelter since January. What a great smile! He's kind of over living in such a small space when he so needs to get his ya-yas out... He is only a kid, just over a year old. However, he's big and strong and needs a leader who can show him the ropes. He's a very nice dog and he enjoys being with people. His champion, Deb Vigna, really likes him because he's a love bug! So, someone who would enjoy a big burly guy who wants to play and be a lover boy, would totally enjoy Peanut. He still needs some training so that would need to be a priority!!

Unfortunately for Peanut, his time is running out quickly and he may be transferred away from our shelter which might NOT be a good thing! Let's find him a home now...

Reggie - A1104261

This poor guy has been at the shelter about a month. He's listed as 13 years old, which I find hard to believe, but he is a senior. Despite this bad picture taken mid-bark, this guy is actually a real sweetheart. He's big and loud when he's in his kennel but when you take him out he softens right up and just becomes a big lug. He's very friendly and super sweet. I was pleasantly surprised at how cool he was when I met him face to face.

Reggie is very stressed out about his predicament and is trying to get your attention! He's not giving up either!! He's a vocal dog who is just expressing his unhappiness about being at the shelter when he's really just wanting to lie in the sun on a soft bed to relax. If you love shepherds, take a moment and meet Reggie. He really is a good guy!

Dogs of the Week! girls girls girls

It's really hard to narrow it down to a few dogs to post this week. I mean there are a slew of black doggies who have been at the shelter too darn long. Also some pitties. But then I have a couple of incredible females that may not be the most glamorous but they are the sweetest!

I'm going with the chicks...

Annie A1081536 Rottweiler Female 5 years old

Who is cuter than Annie? NO ONE! She is such a good girl and so so chubby! She's definitely overweight, but it doesn't stop her from being adorable and playful. She has such a terrific personality! She loves a plush squeaky toy and will even run... a little bit... to play with it! Of course, she is loving the belly rubs! She is a riot!

A couple of things, Annie does have a strong prey drive so cats and small dogs are probably not going to work with her, unless YOU really know what you are doing. She would do best with a male dog friend.

Otherwise, she loves all people and being in the spotlight. Please give this girl a chance to show you how sweet she is!

Tofu A1082182 Terrier mix 2 years old

This girl is crazy cute! She looks like something out of a Star Wars movie. She's all fuzzy like a stuffed toy. Her hair color is a melange of brown, black, gray, white... Then her eyes are this impossible shade of brown! She doesn't look like any other dog that I've seen. She is super cool!

Her personality has evolved quite a bit since she first arrived at WLA. Hey, she was a little upset that she was now in doggie jail, what happened??? Tofu has made a lot of progress since then. Now she loves everyone and wags her tail happily. She's also gained a little weight! She loves to sit on my foot, so I know!

Very neat dog, not sure how she does with kids or cats but she's good around other dogs. She's very responsive to correction and food motivated. She's ready to be trained and be your new best friend... What do you think?

Jenny 1085117 Lab mix 8 years old

Jenny definitely has her fans. She is the sweetest lady, just so easy going and nice. She's very happy to see you any time! Boy and she loves her food! This is a lovely dog who could be a wonderful companion for any person with a heart. Seniors would love her as she is calm and delightful to be around.

Admittedly, she has her flaws. Her mouth is a little hard, but that's workable just watch your fingers! She also has a growth on her face that may need to be removed. Come on, are you perfect????

This girl deserves a home to live out her best years! Don't let this chick die at the shelter.

Hope A1092173

Hope is a 9 year old shepherd mix. She's a wonderful dog who loves people and other dogs. Hope has been described as "easy" and "loving." What would it take to get this dog into your life? She's as nice as they come, she's not too big and very quiet. She's happy to hang out and isn't super picky about much of anything... She just needs your commitment to making a home for her.

This dog deserves the GREATEST home ever, but she'll take a pretty good one...

What's matter with Brown Mutts anyway????

Katya and Emily, it's a love fest!

My really good friend Katya (www.sheltershopper.com) who loves shelter dogs as much as I do wants to know what the problem is! Her favorite dogs at South LA just happened to be brown. They are super sweet and wonderful. Here is what she has to say about these 3 brown kids who are really on their last day at the shelter!

BROWN DOGS. That's all people see when they walk by their kennels. Just brown dogs, mutts, not puppies and not fluffies. Little do they know they are walking by some pretty amazing dogs! These 3 brown mutts are more than just nondescript mixes- they are good dogs, loving, and beautiful- inside and out. They like other dogs and want nothing but a friend of their own and a warm, soft place. Smooch A1089917 - 3 yrs old - medium size

Smooch is absolutely darling. He is like a giant teddy bear that walks! In his kennel he's shy, but once he steps out and looks into your eyes and sees friendship, he comes out of his shell in the cutest of ways! He smiles. He smooches. He snuggles. Smooch doesn't make a peep, and he's lived with many kennelmates just fine. He's been there since early Feb and is now depressed...people walk by him and they just keep walking, seeing nothing but a sad brown dog. We know they're wrong, don't we? At only 3 years old and neutered, Smooch is ready to go home. He has years of love to give - and we want him to be loved too, please. Time is of the essence for Smooch- he is now on the New Hope list.

Got Hope? This sweet girl is just a heartbreaker. She is mellow and easy, and her favorite things are treats and scratches behind her ears. Hope is the kind of dog you wouldn't even know is at your house! She is a gem, and is kind to both people and other dogs. Not sure if she's actually 9 years old, but she is a senior...and she doesn't deserve to perish at South LA as the end of her life. Hope is also much prettier in person. She has grace and dignity and the most amazing thing is that she holds out hope even though she is an older brown dog at a shelter...giving her a happy home to live out her remaining years would be a true mitzvah (translation: good deed! don't we all need good karma?)

Emily A0850238, 6 years old, medium size

And then there is Emily- her and Smooch could be twins! You know her story: adopted as a puppy, returned later. Emily is already spayed, only 6 years old, and she's ready for a nice family to belong to. Emily has got SOUL. She is a deep girl and would be the most loyal of friends. Emily has been at SLA too long, and we all want to see her get out safely. She gets along great with her kennelmate- a young pittie sweetheart who has actually helped Emily brighten up! Though she seems to still worry about her fate, in her eyes there is faith that someone will help her. Could it be you? Another brown mutt she is not- Emily has strength and sweetness to give...what a great combo for any home!

I know this plea is long- and I know it's hard to look at 3 dogs all at once. But they have the same story- adult brown mutts who get overlooked every day. How their final chapters end is up to us. Please please please pass this along and network Smooch, Hope, and Emily. This is a chance to let them be ambassadors for brown dogs everywhere, should they get the chance to live. Best Buddies & Seniors for Seniors

The WLA Shelter has two great programs to help get more dogs adopted. Seniors for Seniors is a program where people over 62 can adopt a dog over 8 years old for, get this, NOTHING, NADA, FREE! The shelter will not charge for the spay/neuter, microchip or license. This makes so much sense since most of these dogs would be perfect for a senior person.

The other program is where 2 dogs who are bonded are designated as Best Buddies. This means that if you adopt one, you get the other for practically nothing. The shelter won't charge the adopter for the spay/neuter or the microchip which saves them a lot of money. I mean it's practically two for one!

The reason I'm telling you about these deals is one, to encourage adoptions of bonded pairs and older dogs and two, to get you out to WLA to adopt these two GREAT dogs, DINO and SAM! (pictures shown above taken by a volunteer!)

Dino and Sam are both super sweet and mellow. They are so happy to just hang out together and with you. I really love taking them out into the yard for a little romp. They follow me all around and Sam always keeps an eye on his pal, Dino. All the volunteers love them.

Dino is really beautiful with a gorgeous fluffy coat. He's a larger medium size dog and probably has some shepherd or collie in there. He has very soulful eyes. Dino loves attention and likes to be brushed. He also likes his food! Dino is spunky, but mellow. Just right for anyone.

Sam is adorable. Take a look at his sweet expression. He is probably a Chow mix. He loves to be around people for some loving. He has a bit of arthritis so he limps a little and can be slow moving. He is just a chill boy looking to relax and enjoy his golden years.

If you know anyone in the market for a calm mature dog, these guys are it! Plus you can take advantage of either Best Buddies or Seniors for Seniors and get two great dogs instead of one! I can't believe these guys are still available... so hurry up!
