Peewee A1123829 has made it this far, don't let him down now!

A1123829 - Pewee, 7 year old, neutered, Chiweenie (Chihuahua/ Dachshund)

Pewee was surrendered to the shelter by his owner because they were moving!! Poor Pewee has been at the shelter since June 14th 2010!!!! Peewee has a deformed nose which may have played a role in his not finding a home by now. :(

All this little man wants for the Holidays is a home to call his own! His demands are minimal... Just a comfy bed, good food and some love. He doesnt require a four legged friend to be... happy so although he does get along with other dogs, he would be quite happy being the only one getting attention.

As you can see from the pictures, Pewee is very tolerant of getting dressed up and posing for his Holiday pics. There is one thing however that Pewee is not so tolerant of... He hates to be picked up!

Please help Pewee find a home for the Holidays!!!

Oswald A1019941 at WLA needs a break!

OSWALD A1019941, 5 years old, Shih-poo, small

Crazy cute and a little crazy! Look at this little guy, he’s quite a little piece of work! He’s gained a reputation for being a little mischievous, not always respecting his kennel mates. Oswald is fine with other dogs his size and even likes to play with them. He needs more time to become more socialized and learn how to interact more successfully with other dogs. However, he’s also a fine only child for the one dog household. An adult home would be best for him.

Ossie is super adorable, he looks like a Star Wars character! He loves to go on walks and frolic around the yard. He loves his people and likes to just relax with them given a chance. He hasn’t had a lot of chances to do that lately and this poor little kid has had a rough time dealing with the stress of the shelter. He needs a home…fast!

Oswald doesn’t shed, but will need grooming.

If you are interested in adopting a dog who needs some love and understanding, this is your boy. He does form strong bonds with his people and with some training this guy is bound to be a terrific companion!

Dog of the WEEK: Little Rocky Rockstar! WLA A1106811, Come on!

Rocky Rockstar, 3 years old, 15 lbs, Neutered

Okay, this little guy has been waiting and waiting for a home. It's just not right! He's a wonderful little fellow.

First off, he's a great size, just right for anyone. Second, he is a good boy, easy to handle and very food motivated so easy to train!

He like pretty much everyone...now... When he first arrived on the scene he was a little scared of everyone. However, with a little love and understanding he got over it. He's really blossomed since being at the shelter. It's weird, but some dogs do!

Best of all, he's fine with other dogs and would be wonderful with an older person since he's a pretty chill little guy himself.

Please don't let Rocky down! He needs a home and someone to look after him right now...

Cookie is hungry for love A1113325 at WLA!

A1113325, 3 years old, Rat Terrier mix

Cookie is so yummy! He's a lapdog of love! He likes to have fun, but best of all he loves a lap to sit on and a face to lick. Cookie is just a bundle of love. He's good with other small dogs and my guess is he'd be fine around cats as he's not very prey driven (a good thing). He doesn't seem to have any issues that I can tell. He's a great small size but not tiny. He's also not overly vocal or rambunctious.

Cookie escaped notice when he first got to WLA because he was pretty scared. He hid in his cubby whenever someone tried to interact with him. Now, he's hanging with his peeps and being all Mr. Friendly to everyone and anyone who will listen... He's actually an excellent dog that I can recommend to almost anyone. He'd be very easy since he's really tuned in to people. Cookie is an excellent dog and I'm shocked that he hasn't been scooped up yet!

Please come meet him soon! He's been at the shelter way too long already, for no good reason! Someone is missing out on a fantastic companion. Hurry up already!!!!

Poor Pauly, he's singing the shelter blues...

Pauly- A1100154 - Dachshund Mix - 3 years old (West LA shelter)

Poor little Pauly. He's such a love and now he finds himself in ISOLATION due to a mishap that recently occurred when he was being shown to a man who tried to force him out of his hiding place. We think Pauly is shy around men so rather than using some finesse to get Pauly out from under the bench, the guy stuck his hand in to pull him out and, well, you guessed it, the guy got bit! Now this little sweetie is RESCUE ONLY!

Not that I excuse biting, but dog's do bite sometimes mostly out of fear. There was a time that I remember growing up when a dog's bite wasn't necessarily the end of the world. We learned that we shouldn't bother a dog who was eating or sleeping. Nowadays, dogs need to be extra careful not to offend anyone with their dog-like behavior lest they end up like Pauly in solitary confinement.

I would say that he wouldn't be a good choice for little kids since they don't get the concept that dogs can and will defend themselves sometimes. Otherwise, anyone would love this guy.

Regardless, Pauly is still a wonderful dog with a charming personality. He is very playful and loving. He likes to play fetch with a soft toy. He was so cute last night when he would run to get the toy, bring it back, and then roll over for the belly rub reward! So cute!

He's a delight! I love his mask, he reminds me of Zorro! There must be a rescue who can take this nice guy.

Dog of the Week! Pauly, surely! plus a few others...

Pauly - A1100154

First off, we have Pauly. This little dude has been at the shelter since March which is pretty long for someone of this small stature and cuteness. I don't get it! He's really a good kid, once you get to know him. He's only about 3 years old or so. He has very striking features like his funny turned out feet (a la Dachshund) and amazing mask like markings. I really like him, he has spunk!

I guess one of the issues that Pauly has struggled with is his jealousy of other dogs when he's around people. He gets along with other dogs, don't get me wrong. He just tends to be a little protective about his personal interests when on the lap of a loved one. It doesn't take much to become a loved one of Pauly, he really likes people!

He's a great dog and very manageable. I think he might do better with someone who has some experience since he can be a tad bossy!


I hate when I have a bunch of dogs to post who have been at the shelter for MONTHS! Okay, at least they are still alive and we've been able to work with them a lot. Some of them have blossomed and have become shelter "favorites." Others, well, not so much... Mainly because they are so stressed out that they are not really thriving in this very stressful environment. Not every dog can handle that.

Tiger - A1079663

There are several exceptional Pit Bulls who have managed to not find homes yet. I've posted Tiger several times now and he's been on FB and on YouTube. He's a wonderful dog, very chill. He is a Shar Pei Pit mix. Tiger is one of the dogs who has really blossomed over the months thanks to his teacher, Deb Fan. He shows very well so we don't really know what's keeping someone from adopting him. I could be that he's so, well, polite.

For some reason most people seem to be turned off by dog's with understated behavior. I suppose that they don't feel that there is an instant connection. Personally, I like the quiet dogs that express their love more subtly. Anyway, Tiger is still at the shelter and he's been there is December! I guess it's lucky for him that he keeps a low profile.

Peanut - A1088572

Then we have a very sweet boy, Peanut, who has been at the shelter since January. What a great smile! He's kind of over living in such a small space when he so needs to get his ya-yas out... He is only a kid, just over a year old. However, he's big and strong and needs a leader who can show him the ropes. He's a very nice dog and he enjoys being with people. His champion, Deb Vigna, really likes him because he's a love bug! So, someone who would enjoy a big burly guy who wants to play and be a lover boy, would totally enjoy Peanut. He still needs some training so that would need to be a priority!!

Unfortunately for Peanut, his time is running out quickly and he may be transferred away from our shelter which might NOT be a good thing! Let's find him a home now...

Reggie - A1104261

This poor guy has been at the shelter about a month. He's listed as 13 years old, which I find hard to believe, but he is a senior. Despite this bad picture taken mid-bark, this guy is actually a real sweetheart. He's big and loud when he's in his kennel but when you take him out he softens right up and just becomes a big lug. He's very friendly and super sweet. I was pleasantly surprised at how cool he was when I met him face to face.

Reggie is very stressed out about his predicament and is trying to get your attention! He's not giving up either!! He's a vocal dog who is just expressing his unhappiness about being at the shelter when he's really just wanting to lie in the sun on a soft bed to relax. If you love shepherds, take a moment and meet Reggie. He really is a good guy!

JONESY: A STORY OF COURAGE AND HOPE

I have asked Samantha to forward this to you to provide a fuller picture of Jonesy, in hopes you will agree that he deserves to get another chance at life. As you may be aware, his time at our shelter is very limited. I have worked with many dogs as a volunteer, but never have I met such a challenge--or found such reward--as with Jonesy.

When he arrived at our shelter in March, Jonesy was a dog so withdrawn in fear that he could only cower--shaking--in the darkness of his kennel, not even able to look at me. Soon thereafter he was adopted. His new owner apparently did not understand how to work with his fearfulness and unfortunately was bitten, prompting the dog's return. That's the short history that got him branded "rescue only."

When Jonesy was placed back in the general population in July, I volunteered to work with him on his issues. Still too fearful to come out from his dark haven or to look at me, I simply sat in the kennel, time after time, talking to him. Finally he inched out a few times until he got the courage to stand by me, eventually letting me pet him, attention he now craves.

Little by little he finally learned to trust me. I do not fear that I will be bitten. I have introduced him to other volunteers who both walk and pet him without incident. He still has some fearfulness/shyness issues, but makes progress each time I work with him. I am truly encouraged. If he has learned to trust me, he can do so with others.

Jonesy's story is truly an inspirational one. I have watched him balance his fear of people against his desire for human contact--and make that crucial decision to take a chance on humans. Whether in humans or animals, that takes a LOT of courage.

And that is why I am writing.

If this dog is willing to overcome his fears and exhibit that kind of courage, he is truly motivated. I know I don't have to tell you how important that is. He's doing his part.

Now I am asking that a group be willing to rescue Jonesy. I know you are all overwhelmed with dogs and such requests, but I am willing to foster him for the while and continue to work on training him to make him more adoptable. (Adding to the adoptability issue, Jonesy is both cute and small.)

I am a former non-profit fundraiser. If one of you will rescue him, I will be happy to help advise you on fundraising issues for your organization.

To all Rescues, here you have a request that not only gives you many reasons why you should rescue this little dog, but a person willing and able to foster and help rehabilitate him. There's no reason not to help!
