With a name like Curly...he's got to be cute!

From a sad little boy...

To a happy little clown!
Curly A1047976, male, poodle x, young

Curly is the sweetest and most friendly little guy. He's a well balanced dog who seems to want to meet every dog in town, big or small! Most of all he loves every person he encounters and before you know it, you have fallen in love.

I spent last Saturday with this guy and what seemed apparent to me is that the shelter environment isn't doing this guy any justice at all. He's pretty vocal when he's stuck in his kennel and just wants to hang out with his friends. He keeps calling them, but they don't seem to hear him! Once out of the kennel, the barking starts to subside and he becomes the greatest little dog!

Curly is young, just around a year old and he is now neutered so he's ready to go home. Curly is a snuggler but also playful. He could use some basic obedience and he will learn quickly. I taught him to sit in a couple of minutes! What a fun family project!

Just a reminder, poodles don't shed so he's a great dog for anyone's home and he's not reactive so he's fine with kids too! What's the problem folks? Don't wait until he is red-listed!

Max was rescued but...

Max is still in trouble as he has been relinquished back to the WLA volunteer who got him out of the shelter and into a rescue. Max was "saved" we thought by a rescue, however, once there was a behavior issue, the rescue decided that they wouldn't keep him. There had been a large donation for this dog which is being returned.

Lesson learned? Rescues are so over burdened right now that MONEY is causing them to make some very bad decisions. The shelter situation is so bad that volunteers are having to raise funds to get the dogs out. Many more dogs than before are being killed due to lack of space or for TIME.

We never know how long we have with each dog. As we learned with Elvis, any behavioral issue that occurs even if it isn't the fault of the dog will be a death sentence. I don't like to sound overly dramatic, but this is serious! Great dogs are being killed, plain and simple...

Please read Kara's story and maybe someone can help her and Max find him a safe haven...

I'm writing about a dog that I and others tried very hard to get rescued out of the West LA shelter, where he was on the list to be put down.

We networked him and raised funds to contribute. It was a known issue that the dog, Max, has a strong tendency to chase small animals, and that was included in the e-mails. I introduced him to some larger dogs in controlled intros and he did well. He is as sweet as can be with humans. He runs over and bows down, then rolls over on his back for belly rubs. He's a cuddler. He is possibly a mix of lab / shep / sharpei, and is 5-7 years old. He's around 53 lbs.

A rescuer eventually stepped forward. Max was neutered, and we drove him to the rescuer in the San Diego area. Everything looked great at first. Rescuer has 4 large male dogs. She said she'd keep Max separate at first and introduce slowly. She predicted that one of her dogs would provoke Max, but that it would be under control. All seemed well.

The next day rescuer said Max was getting along fine with her dogs. The following day (Tuesday this week) Max was off-leash in the yard with all of her dogs. This was less than one week after he was neutered. It is not clear what happened but Max and the predicted provoker got in a bad fight and her dog was injured. Rescuer now wants Max out.

I tried hard to raise $$ and find a good rescue because I'm not positioned with time or expertise to place a dog. Max, it is now known, is a dominant male, and will chase small animals. The rescuer did start to work with Max by showing him her cat, and correcting him when he got excited. He responded well to the correction -- backed down onto his haunches. He may do fine with a submissive female dog, but it seems clear he needs to be placed with a dog-savvy owner.

A portion of the funds that went towards Max's rescue are going towards vet bills, but I will generate donations or pay for boarding or do anything I can to help get Max into a safe and appropriate situation.

Thanks for reading!

Noooo, not Elvis! Rottie love.

Sorry to say Elvis didn't make it. RIP sweet boy.
Elvis (A1050314): 8 year old, male, Rottweiler

(according to the shelter) Came in as a stray on July 24th 2009. Elvis appeared to be super friendly at first, rolling on his back and lapping up the attention. When medical tried to examine a switch flipped and he got wild eyed, growled and snapped.

Hmmm, sounds like my Rottweiler, Ace. He may just be afraid and who can blame him. Here he is on the RED LIST already!

Rotties are one of my favorite breeds. I've only heard good things about this beautiful Rottie. Someone who knows the breed would make the best home! Wish I knew more about this gorgeous boy, he is sooooo adorable and has been friendly towards me.

I've spoken to volunteers who have been working with this dog over the past weeks and all say he is a DOLL! Apparently someone at the shelter had a issue with him, but nothing has been verified other than his fear of the vet. This is no reason to kill a beautiful and loving dog like Elvis!

Please come meet him at the West LA Shelter 11361 West Pico Blvd. He has only hours left...

Abel is not able to find a home... last days.

Urgent from the South LA Shelter!!!

Abel A1048171

Red-listed on 7/28 -- totally out of time!!

1 1/2 year old boxer mix with very long legs is one of the sweetest dogs around. I showed him to a family with a 5-month old baby. Abel walked right up and slurped baby on the leg. He loves every single solitary person. That tail never stops. Just a happy boy -- now facing his end in a dark kennel? To add to his attributes, Abel has spent his two weeks in a cage with other dogs -- and frolics with them as well. Please save this boy's life!!!

Call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119.

And kindly let me know. Thanks so much.

Some new friends from the event this weekend!

MAX A1033711, adult, all american mutt
Any dog who likes to spoon, is a friend of mine...
Max is a lover, a lover of people. He's okay around other animals, but he's a people person. What a nice guy. These first couple of pix are from the event where he actually did spoon with me, in front of everyone! What a very good boy!!

Jim A1041181, 2 years, Pittie mix ADOPTED 8/7/09!
Okay, I'm a sucker for the half/half face dog. This guy is soooo super nice. Very mild mannered and mellow with everyone and every animal. He is just a babe! And cutie pie to match. Love him for almost anyone... He really stood out as a great dog at this event.

Both of these great dogs can be found at the West LA shelter!
