The Shelter Chronicles: Awesome Dogs who NEED YOU!

More emergencies, when will it end????? This guy is really nice, kind of aloof until he gets to know you. He's easy going though and easy to handle even though he's pretty big. Not sure if he gets along with other dogs at this point. He would be fine with a couple or single who is looking for a low key dog.

A1024628 - Van Gogh **RED LISTED**

Van Gogh is a 6 year old, neutered, Rottweiler.

He came to the shelter as a stray on April 20th 2009.

This nice old gentleman is easy to walk and although he has shown interest in other dogs, he is not reactive. He lacks knowledge of basic commands and does not really have any interest in toys or playing in the kiddie pool. He would not be suited to a home with cats.

Van Gogh is RED LISTED!! He needs to be adopted / rescued by 5pm Wednesday July 1st 2009.

If you are able to help Van Gogh please contact the New Hope Coordinator at:

The Shelter Chronicles: update Kiki goes to rescue

KiKi

Here is an update on the GSD female who was found collapsed in this nice person's driveway. The dog is now at German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County. Any donations that can be sent for her boarding and care would be greatly appreciated. If you can foster this dog, even better! Here is the link to their donation page!

German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County

Here is the email from the person who found the dog originally...

Thanks everyone for continuing to keep tabs on Kiki the abandoned German Shepherd and for helping me, in whatever way, to find her a home.

Kiki spent two weeks in our home recuperating from her time on the streets and from the neglect she had suffered for how knows long. Thanks to the kindness of my neighbor, Kathy L., she received the immediate medical treatment she needed and was recovering nicely from fly strike and hot spots. The hair had even started to grow back on her face. When she arrived at our house she wouldn't let a man get within ten feet of her without baring her teeth. When she left she knew that at least there was one man who would throw tennis balls and take her for walks.

In spite of all of our efforts we were unable to find Kiki a forever home yet. Over the course of the last two weeks I have spoken with many rescue groups who all say the same thing, this is a terrible time to be an abandoned animal. I am sure this is no surprise to many of you, but what you may not know is that in the county of Los Angeles thousands of animals are being put down EVERY day. Pets, that in other times would have no problem being placed, are languishing in cages only to be put down in the end. Kiki had been used to breed puppies and I can only guess she had outgrown her usefulness.

As hard as it was to take Kiki and drop her off in Orange County at some dismal kennel overlooking the freeway, I had to make the hard choice for our family. With three dogs and two school-aged children, it was not the best situation for us or Kiki. I contacted no less than ten rescue groups, many of whom were unable even to return my call. The Westside German Shepherd Rescue was already fostering over fifty dogs and offered to pay me to keep in her my home. They informed me that there was really no chance for them to find such an old (5 yrs) dog a home. The Orange County German Shepherd Rescue also has over fifty dogs but said they would at least try to find her a home. I can't begin to tell you how sad I am as I write this email.

Last night after we got home from O.C. the children and I sat down and made a donation to the German Shepherd Rescue of OC to cover the costs of Kiki's vaccinations and spaying. We will continue to make a weekly contribution in her name for her boarding until hopefully she finds a home. What I am asking of my friends is that you take a moment to consider what you can do to help even one animal in need. Very few of the "senior" dogs (over 3 years-old) are being placed. Could you or someone you know adopt, or even foster, one of the abandoned animals? Do you or someone in your family have time to volunteer to at a shelter or rescue group? Can you make a donation to a rescue group, in any amount, that might give a dog or cat a few more days of hope at finding a home?

In closing, I cannot even imagine how hard it is too run a rescue group. Obviously, you have to be an animal lover to take on such a commitment, but in such difficult times it must seem almost hopeless. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done to nurse this dog back to help and gain her trust ,only to drop her off to who knows what fate. To do this over and over again on a daily basis is beyond my comprehension.

Thanks everyone, and if you can pass this on it would be much appreciated.

The Shelter Chronicles: Oliver at WLA NOW

Oliver is an amazingly pretty dog who just needs some help! Please, consider adopting him today.

Oliver hates the shelter. Oliver loves the park.

Oliver (A1019322, only 1 year old, lab mix) was a South L.A. dog. He was considered adoptable enough to be transferred to WLA. Now, because of the huge numbers of dogs coming in daily, his time is up even there.

Oliver came to our South L.A. mobile at Moorpark Park in May. I had to see for myself what this one blue-eyed dog was all about.

At the park, he was amazing. He had a best friend kennelmate and everyone loved the two of them. They were gentle, they were sweet and they were free to be who they really are. Not some dog in a dark kennel with bars all around.

The volunteers at WLA, the volunteers at Moorpark Park, the volunteers at SLA -- we are all begging for Oliver's life.
Here is what the WLA volunteer says about him : I'm so distressed about Oliver. Since I've been working with him he's not as shy as he once was. Once he bonds with someone he's super sweet and affectionate. And can be very focused. He just needs some time to build confidence. We used to have that time at West LA but alas no longer.

Please call the West L.A. shelter at once and save Oliver. (213) 485-0494 or -0495.

If you can't get through but can come for him, please call me and I will relay the message to the supervisor at WLA.

The Shelter Chronicles: Play with Misty for me, it's URGENT!

ACT with Misty!

Misty, STAFF FAVORITE, (A1028510, 4 year old pit mix) was brought in to the shelter on May 5th by an officer who found her chained, without food, without water. Emaciated.
The claim against Misty was that, while chained up, she had severely attacked a small dog that came in to her yard. We can't know exactly what happened -- but we can certainly attest to the fact that she has never shown one moment of aggression towards any animal while at the shelter. Not a dog -- though she has been walked by many, day in and day out; not a cat or a kitten -- though she has walked past them as well. Junior, her ACT pal, would be happy to discuss her behavior if anyone has questions.

The South L.A. shelter has actually been a blessing for Misty. There she has finally known what it is to be loved. Junior and the other ACT's at the annex have showered her with attention, with devotion. Though they have saved her life from the hands of a horrible owner, we now need to save her life once again. Misty is red-listed (as of Thursday, June 18th) and has little time left. Regardless of how loving she is with everyone ; regardless of the fact that she is perfectly trained to sit, stay, etc; regardless of the fact that she is so full of joy -- she faces a fate we don't want to talk about.

Misty is a truly wonderful dog. Still trusting of people, though so horribly mistreated.

Please save her. Call the South L.A. shelter at
(213) 485-0117 or -0119.

And kindly let me know that you can rescue her. Junior (who will be happy to speak with anyone about Misty, his favorite dog) and the other ACT's want to know as well.

Thanks so much,
Andrea

The Shelter Chronicles:HELP! They need somebody!!!

Wow, all I can say is what a depressing time this is if you are a dog at the shelter. It used to be that the dogs at WLA were pretty much safe from deaths door as long as they had a good disposition, were healthy and adoptable. Those days are over...

Now that the LAAS has decided that all city shelters will be treated the same, regardless of how many animals they have or what the intake/adoption ratio is at that particular location, death is a reality for ALL of our animals based on time. West LA dogs no longer have the time factor on their side.

That said, have a look at the "cheerful" (not) New Hope alerts being sent out. Now if these don't make you run right out and adopt these dogs, I don't know what will...

--------------------------------------------------------------
Piccachu and Adonis are both 5 years old and both sterilized.

They were surrendered by their owner because they were moving. They are very shy in the kennel and co dependent on each other but once they are out in the yard they love to run and play. Very sweet dogs that love affection.

Piccachu and Adonis are RED LISTED and needs to be adopted by Monday 22nd June 2009.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Tyson is a 9 month old, neutered, American Staff.

Tyson was surrendered by his owner because of a skin condition that he was on medication for. They were growing frustrated and no longer wanted to deal with it. Tyson's skin is now better after continuing treatment here at the shelter.

Tyson did have a kennel mate, a female American Staff that has since been adopted. Since then he has not accepted any other kennel mate. Tyson has also shown possible male aggression after he tried to bite a potential adopter. (this statement is completely false, he was playing and was overly excited, he has not shown aggression) He is however OK with females.

Tyson is RED LISTED and needs to be adopted by Monday 22nd June 2009.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Tosca is a 1 1/2 year old, spayed, Lab/ Shepherd Mix that came to the shelter as a stray on March 18th 2009.

Tosca knows how to sit, down, play dead. She is very trainable and retrieves well. Obedience is awesome but needs to work on relaxing around other dogs.

Tosca is RED LISTED and needs to be adopted by Monday 22nd June 2009.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Oliver is a 13 month old, male, Labrador Mix.

Oliver is very attentive and listens well to verbal commands. He is very friendly with people but does take some time to warm up to strangers, especially men.(This dog is really great and will blossom if given the chance!)

Oliver is RED LISTED and needs to be adopted by Monday 22nd June 2009.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Lucky is a 6 year old, male, Chow Chow.

Lucky was given to his owners about a year ago. They could no longer care for him and did not have time for him anymore. According to them Lucky was kept indoors and is not good with other dogs. The volunteers take him out here at the shelter and say that he is a really sweet dog. He is distracted by other dogs but is food motivated and knows basic commands.
Lucky is RED LISTED and needs to be adopted by Monday 22nd June 2009.

The Shelter Chronicles: Don't let this GSD go to the shelter!

look at this sad little face!

This German Shepherd was found Saturday morning collapsed on someone's driveway in Mar Vista. Please contact me directly through this blog if you are interested in adopting this beautiful dog.
At first I thought maybe she had been hit by a car because she wouldn't move anything but her head. Turns out she was starving, dehydrated and had pad wounds from running around so much. After hand feeding her we were able to get her into the car and take her to nearby vet. Turns out she was just terribly neglected, at some point in her life she has had puppies, she has not been neutered, and no she does not have a chip. She has been checked out, dewormed, and tested for parasites and scabbies. She has a clean bill of health as far as that goes. She was suffering from fly strike on her ears and face from being left outside. She is currently on antibiotics to prevent infection while she heals.

We are calling her Kiki, she is very sweet and gentle with my
children. She was very afraid of my husband the first day, but when he just sat in a chair it only took her a few minutes to walk over and give him a big lick. Somewhere along the line some man was not nice to her. She has been sleeping at the side of my bed and seems to be good in the house. I had her bathed today and she is a very different dog from the one in my driveway on Saturday.

South LA doggies who need a home or rescue!!!!!

www.laanimalservices.com

click on the picture to see it better.

The Shelter Chronicles: The Mojave Project

This video will give you a good idea of what's going on at the Bemis property. Many of these beautiful dogs still need medical care, foster homes, rescue's to sponsor them, etc. Please, whatever you can do to help will be appreciated. For more info, please see www.wuffingtonwag.com.

Please read the plea below written by the people who have done an unbelievable job in making this conviction happen in addition to rescuing the hundreds of dogs that were languishing at the Bemis property. We are asking that a letter be written to the judge in the case requesting that Bemis and Trapani receive the maximum sentence. Sentencing will take place on June 17th. Please circulate this request to everyone you know who cares about justice and animals.

Just so you know, I have witnessed first hand the sickening conditions that these animals have been forced to live under at the hands of Bemis and her cohorts. I can assure you that anything less than the maximum sentence will be a travesty of justice. Please send the message that animal hoarding will not be tolerated!

On May 18th Cynthia Trapani was convicted of 6 counts of ANIMAL CRUELTY. Cynthia Bemis was convicted of 14 counts of ANIMAL CRUELTY. Although these are felony charges and the maximum sentence is approximately 6-9 years, due to prison overcrowding and expected budget cuts, the sentences could well be reduced to time served, in lieu of extended probation and pschological treatment. writing a letter to the District Attorney who succefully prosecuted the Bemis/Trapani case, Andrea Kohler, and to Judge Kenneth Twissleman. The sentencing will be held on June 17th. Recidivism rates are very high for hoarders, probation or not. There are no doubts that Bemis and Trapani will start hoarding more animals the minute they get out. A maximum sentence will send a loud clear message that hoarding will not be tolerated, especially in Counties like Kern, where it is not illegal to keep 300 animals on a 2 acre property. A problem that leads to neglect and cruelty whether it was intended or not.

I dont know about you, but I am sick of cleaning up after these people. For the sake of the animals, lets do all we can to make sure they are given the maximum sentence.

Please write a polite letter to Judge Kenneth Twisselman and/or District Attorney, Andrea Kohler, urging them to press for the maximum sentence and use this opportunity to send a message that will hopefully discourage other hoarders, and most of all keep these two locked up for as long as possible. The dogs and cats who have suffered at the hands of these women are counting on you to make sure justice is served !

The Shelter Chronicles: Weekend Warriors

Holy moly, where did the weekend go???

Saturday was the SAAFLA garage sale which wasn't a huge success but just enough to help a few more doggies who really need it... Still there is something soooo exhausting about a garage sale!

Sunday, I went up to Mojave to help with the rescue efforts on the Bemis property. Let me tell you, the folks working on this situation have done an incredible job in finding rescues and fosters to help out. Remember, there were hundreds of dogs on the property when the case was going on. Thankfully Cindy Bemis was convicted of 14 counts of animal cruelty (really it should be a lot more) and has been in jail waiting to be sentenced, giving rescues a chance to help the poor animals being held captive on the property. There are probably around 50 or so dogs still roaming around and in kennels. Mostly Shepherds and Chows. For more on the case, see Helen Storey's website The Wuffington Wag. Way to go Helen!!!!

As a result of my busy schedule, I didn't visit the shelter this weekend. :-(

There are some dogs that are RED LISTED right now at the West LA shelter. However the BIG story is that the South LA shelter has been overwhelmed by by relinquishment! Hundreds in the past week! What the hell is going on??? Are people using the shelter as a boarding facility while they go on vacation? It's horrible and the volunteers are reeling... Please do what you can to help out the dogs and volunteers at South LA. They need HELP!

Meanwhile, back at WLA, we don't see to be as swamped; yet, some dogs may be going down. Speaking of dogs who need help...

I don't know any of these 3 dogs very well, but I know that our volunteers have worked with both Cha Cha and Sinatra, two pretty Pitties. They are both people friendly dogs! They are REACTIVE towards other dogs, but we haven't tested them formally. The little MinPin, I'm not really sure why he's in trouble but my guess is someone in medical didn't like his fiesty manner. He still deserves a chance!

A1022481 - Ziggy **RED ALERT**
Ziggy is a 10 year old, male, Miniature Pinscher that came to the shelter as a stray on April 11th 2009.
